An idea came to me today:

Draco started smoking during the war. A nasty muggle habit he picked up from one of the shopkeepers who’d deliver food to the Manor every other Tuesday. She was French and crass, with cropped dark hair and a sharp tongue. She would smirk at Draco every time he came to the gates to collect the packages, holding out her hand, a small brown, hand-rolled cigarette presented between her index and middle finger. Her thin, raised eyebrow was as much of a challenge as any, and oddly enough, one he could meet without cowardice in those days. He could take what was offered without fear of repremand or consiquence. Draco found a small bit of accomplishment in the act. A bit of power gained back.

Her visits were a mercy to him. They left him feeling something other than the endless dread of a wasted life. His frayed nerves soothed ever so slightly by the burning smoke that would coax its way through his lungs.

It’d been ten years and he’d yet to kick the habit. Harry knew all this, of course. He knew Draco’s history, his scars, and his tendencies to hang on to creature comforts, even if they were a detriment to his health. Harry would never force Draco to do anything. He knew he didn’t have the power to bend the man to his will even if he tried, but he would lean into his side with a squeeze to his shoulder every time he saw Draco reaching for his papers and his tabaco. He’d kiss his hair, and whisper soothing reassurances in his ear as Draco would light up, ending with a gently uttered, you shouldn’t smoke, darling, before pulling back, wishing that one day Draco would listen.

I don’t understand the logic that whoever is calmest in an argument is winning and that somehow anger invalidates your words. I mean I can argue that your great aunt’s name is Jihinksenbob for an hour straight and be perfectly fine. It’s very easy to be calm when the topic doesn’t affect you personally or you just don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.
