It seemed to Dedue that as much as Dimitri didn’t want to admit it, these trips were to satisfy his own bloodlust. Summary: As they arrive in Jidoor, the Blue Lions seek out a mysterious dark-haired stranger known as The Swordsman to borrow his airship. When the Swordsman reveals his plan to kidnap an opera star, they see this as the perfect opportunity to work something out.

Written as a pinch hit for Tris in the Sylvix Gift Exchange 2022.

The air felt thick with dread, with anticipation of the battle to come. It was obvious that the Professor was doing everything they could to shield the students from whatever was building up around them, but it was impossible to keep them completely in the dark. The Blue Lions had been going over tactics, formations, battle strategies with greater urgency every day, and Byleth had told them to make use of the training grounds whenever they had a free moment.

School was ending, yes, but it was more than that. They all knew that something was coming.

Pressure was building inside Garreg Mach, and it was impossible to say when it would blow.

Mercedes had started to go to the church every day, sometimes for hours, usually with Annette in tow. Ingrid and Ashe focused on their horse and pegasus respectively, giving them extra treats after any mock battle. And under his breath when he thought no one else was listening, Dimitri would murmur that they were running out of time. Even Felix knew he was right, and he often did not take kindly to Dimitri’s wisdom. Sylvain’s easy laughter sounded less often. Only Dedue seemed unchanged still trailing Dimitri wherever he went, stoic and silent.

The Blue Lions didn’t know who the Flame Emperor was, but they were sure of one thing: when they made their next move, it would change everything.

Sylvain’s hand on the reins of his horse. The other grasping at his lance, thrusting it ruthlessly toward his assailant.

Felix saw it in slow motion as the red-haired man descended upon the battlefield.

Letting go of the reins, running through his hair in a gesture that made Felix wish it was his own hand.

Felix bit his own lip just the barest amount, before the clash of swords forced this fantasy to come crashing down. His sword, which he was holding up in a defensive posture against his opponent’s axe. This could have been a particularly costly moment to get distracted.

And it was so unlike Felix to lose focus in a battle. Even when he trained, he was uniquely able to block out anything and everything else that was happening, and just concentrate on using his sword.

Except for a certain red-haired man.

“Yes, yes—ah, just like that. Good. Right there.”

Byleth leaned back against her desk, bracing herself against it, using the extra support to stay upright while Sylvain’s tongue worked between her legs.

Until a week ago, it had been five years since she had seen any of the Blue Lions. They had all grown up so nicely during their time away from each other. And while she still saw them as her students – and her their Professor – they were all old enough now that she no longer felt like she had to draw such a hard line between her personal and professional life. There was one person in particular with whom that line had… blurred.

He could have died.

Sylvain sat alone in his room at Garreg Mach, staring vacantly at the closed door.

He slowly let out his breath, sinking back into his chair. For hours now, Sylvain had been siting there  alone, turning over the events of the last day in his mind, trying to convince himself to--

To do what, exactly? A voice in the back of his mind asked. But Sylvain shoved it away, refusing to think about  what he would do  .

Felix was his best friend,  even if they didn’t always agree. In fact, it was his   stubbornness that made Sylvain think –  even take for granted –  that Felix would be in his life till the end. Just like they had promised each other when they were growing up.

But seeing him like that--

Sylvain had never been so worried. He never wanted to see Felix in that state again: battered, bleeding, broken, gasping in pain. Always a nimble swordsman, a master of his craft by the time they left Garreg Mach the first time, Felix had avoided serious injuries more times than Sylvain could count.

This time, he hadn’t been so lucky.

Dear Felix,

Do you remember when you first picked up a sword, under Glenn’s guidance? He tried to teach me, too, but I didn’t take to it like you did. Ingrid and I had better luck with lances. Even then, I knew that choosing a weapon and learning how to use it, how to defend the people who are most important to me, would be an essential part of my life. But I don’t think any of us could have anticipated just how much we would have to defend as our lives wore on.

Soon I will be leaving this battlefield to return to Garreg Mach. There are times, late at night, if I am unable to sleep, when I worry that I should stay, that I should continue to take a stand against the Empire here. I’m sure you are having the same doubts. But going back to Garreg Mach – that is another promise that we must keep.

I look forward to seeing you soon, Felix.

Ashe knocked on the door firmly, the raps sounding through the door to the other side. “I was told the Queen wanted to see me,” he said, respectfully, for the benefit of the guard stationed to the right of the door. He was looking forward, hardly acknowledging the silver-haired man, no doubt because he knew why Ashe was there. It was late at night, and although there were many legitimate reasons for Ashe to be visiting the Queen as the head of her Royal guard, this wasn’t one of them.

“You will be coming in,” Petra said, her accent pronounced. When they were fully clothed, Ashe found it adorable that she still tried so earnestly to learn how to make her speech sound more natural, even after all this time. But when they weren’t, hearing Petra order him around, it wasn’t so cute anymore. It was undeniably sexy.

Twisting the doorknob, Ashe opened the door just wide enough to be able to step through, then closed it behind him. He was tempted to tell the guard that he was dismissed for the night, but it wasn’t as if Ashe would be in any fit state to protect the Queen properly for at least the next hour. Better to be safe than sorry, even if he ended up hearing something, wasn’t it?

Besides, it wasn’t as if this was a particularly illicit affair. It was two long-time friends, finally becoming something more. Maybe someday it would become more, still – but Ashe was in no rush. For now, they were just having fun.
