USC Partnership Extends to N3 Classrooms N3 Professional Development Recap March 4, 2014 Through our ongoing partnership with USC Rossier School of Education, Dr. Sandra Kaplan, Dr. Jessica Manzone, and Dr. Pat Gallagher were inspired to create curriculum in critical thinking for kindergarten readiness. Our direct relationship with the team at USC allowed our pre-kindergarten to be chosen to be the first to receive the lessons, with direct professional development from the experts. As discussed at the January WPA meeting, the first four learning experiences were related to cause and effect, questioning (open vs. closed), discriminating and differentiating, and making connections. The two learning experiences that were rolled out this week extend and make more sophisticated the skills that have already been practiced.

This week we conclude the reading of the book of Exodus. Whenever we finish a book of Torah, we say, “חֲזַק חֲזַק ונתחזק” - “Be strong, be strong and we will be strengthened.” 

When we learn together - Torah or math, science or music - we are strengthened and we strengthen one another. To be a learning community is to understand and embrace this truth.

Late Pick Up Policy As you know, the safety of your children is of the utmost importance to all of us at Wise School.  We have carpool dismissal at 3:30 p.m., and the teachers are with the students until their class is picked up. Once the final carpool announcement is made, any remaining students are escorted to the main office by the teachers. Our office staff contacts parents and waits with the late students. Our office is very busy at this time of day, and the last staff person leaves at 4:30 p.m., so we are implementing some important new procedures.

Starting Wednesday, January 22, we will have a half-hour grace period for any late carpool pick up. At 4:00 p.m. any students remaining in the office will go with our CYE staff to their office, where their staff will take over the supervision. The CYE staff will have a form with the student name, and a place for the person picking up to sign them out.  Because we are adding staffing responsibilities, there will be a charge of $1 per minute late after 4:00 p.m. This payment must be made at the time of pick up either by cash, check or credit card – we will not bill for this.

Thank you for supporting the work of our office staff and helping to make sure that all students are safely supervised and picked up in a timely manner.
