I do actually find the term "main character syndrome" helpful because I think it really does a good job describing this trend where people think that they are the only ones who are interesting, who have hobbies and interests, who have complex internal lives, and who care about things like privacy and being treated with respect.
Anyway I just saw someone say that it's performative to read Sylvia Plath in a coffee shop and I am so deeply exhausted.
And the thing is that I do think that there's some truth the idea that publicly engaging in hobbies is performative but not in the disdainful way that a lot of people think it? I think for a lot of people, doing things like reading their favorite poetry book or knitting or whatever in public is performative in the sense that they desperately want to form connections with other people with similar hobbies and so they're doing those things in hopes someone will talk to them about it.
And I don't think that's a bad thing! I think we are at a point in time where people are very deeply lonely and seeking connection in any way they can get it and sometimes that means being vulnerable and "cringey" where other people can see. And instead of judging them for that or making a disdainful tiktok or youtube "essay", maybe you should walk up to them and ask about what they're doing. You might just get a new hobby and a new friend out of it.
all this, but also, it is pleasant to work on hobbies in a pleasant place! How is it that we all bemoan the lack of third spaces and then put SO MUCH hate on people trying to do things in public?
It is pleasant to work on hobbies in a pleasant place! Back when I lived next to a tea house, I would go there and camp out all day, literally from open to close, with my full-ass painting supplies.
I tipped very well, was constantly introducing new customers to the store, and if I was there long enough to run through one pot of tea I would buy a second one, well aware of the social contract of being a loyal customer. No one ever expressed frustration with me and to be honest pretty much no one ever came up to me to ask what I was doing.
And that was okay, because I was there to drink yummy tea and be surrounded by plants and art and soft music and the gentle backdrop of other voices. It was a very productive, relaxing space to be in, and there's simply not an equivalent in my own home. If I could afford it, I would rent a studio space. Working at a cafe is like that, but also there's free wifi and a never-ending supply of vanilla rose chai.
So yes, I agree that quite a number of people who work on their hobbies in public would be happy and excited to talk about those hobbies. But I think it would be a stretch to call it performative. It's performative in the same way all human interaction is performative.

They're also not paying their bill to a small Swedish non-profit Viking association – the production borrowed a historical reenactment ship and used it harshly enough that it needs extensive repairs. The association has done the repairs and, per agreement, sent their bill for materials only: 60 000 SEK.
Nolan & co are refusing to pay what they owe... About 6,170 USD.
That's not missing a zero, they are not forking up the six thousand measly dollars to this volunteer-driven, historical society who run on a minimal budget, did all the repair work for free and lent them a nice boat that appears in several movie scenes.

Frankly I think we as a society, especially Americans, need to recognize and acknowledge that not everyone has access to a library with free cards and a comprehensive physical and digital collection. Not everyone has access to a library at all. Many people live in areas without public libraries and many people live in areas where their libraries cost a fee (sometimes a very hefty fee). If your discussion about access to books (including apps and pirating) does not include those people, then you can't be surprised when they get pissed off and annoyed at you treating your experiences with libraries as universal.
"Just go to a library!" Well, what do you do when you don't have a library to go to? All these apps you suggest as alternatives aren't actually alternatives to a library, they are extensions of a library you have to be registered with. So what's your next suggestion?
"Just buy the books!" Books aren't released everywhere in the world or in every language and, as many people outside the US have pointed out, book prices often aren't changed to fit local currency. A book that is $20 in the US could cost someone else's entire paycheck in another country. This has been pointed out again and again but a lot of Americans simply do not want to hear it.
I don't know what the solution to this problem is, but I DO know that it doesn't involve shaming or harassing anyone over not having access to books through a library and it definitely doesn't involve accusing them of lying or not trying hard enough.
Also homeless people exist and don't have access to most library services either. Living in an area with a great public library doesn't mean shit if you don't have an address to register for a card with.

i was training a young person at work, and she referred to sexual assault as "SA" out loud, and i immediately was like, "no, it's sexual assault, call it what it is," bc idgaf if the algorithm overlords have taught y'all that you should fear direct language, how tf do any of you expect to ever address real issues with any amount of seriousness if you can't even say the words? imagine an advocate looking a sexual assault survivor in the eyes and asking "did he grape you?" it's absolutely fucking absurd, but these young interns and new hires are coming into an environment where we deal with survivors of all different kinds of abuse, and they're coming with the mindset that the words are as bad as the actions, and that makes them shitty at the job and look juvenile af
i HATE self-censorship for a lot of reasons, but being in crisis work makes it even more frustrating. who are you censoring for? like i am being so fr, WHO are you censoring for? have you even thought it through? people who have been raped know that they have been raped. if someone attempts suicide or is grieving someone who did, saying "sewer slide" isn't going to protect them from any of the feelings. a murder victim's family isn't going to feel better bc you said "unalived" instead of murdered. if anything, it's just extremely invalidating and othering. it's saying "what happened to you is so bad that i won't even say the word," which is NOT trauma-informed care. you are not protecting survivors/victims when you self-censor. the ONLY things you protect when you self-censor are the puritanical ideologies that are being encouraged by rich fascists who want your money and obedience

Getting really tired of how all the anti porn censorship posts going around are like, "I don't like porn but I will defend it" or "it was bad for me to see porn young but it's better than the alternative." I like porn. I want to see porn. I was not damaged by seeing porn as a young person. Porn and erotica are valid and fun vehicles for artistic expression and completely normal expressions of human sexuality.
