I am a long gapper in the sense that I got wandered away from Tumblr circa 2017ish and came back in 2024 and all of a sudden people are writing entire essays in the tags.
I will not do this.
I will die on the hill that readability trumps whatever is being signaled by having paragraphs in the tags.
"Are you drunk?"
"Yeah, dude! You should be too!"

Ok extra context from your friendly neighborhood Master's Degree holding archivist:
Archives are "curated" according to what's called a "collection policy". That means a policy that dictates what you collect; usually along a theme. For example at the university I used to work at the collection policy was to collect archival material pertaining to the local area and its history/important figures. At the historic home I currently work at, the collection policy covers materials pertaining to the person who lived at the house.
AO3 collects fan works and original writing. That's it. That's how they "curate". They don't allow a copy paste of published works (for legal reasons) and they don't allow commissioned works (for legal reasons) . Everything else that falls under fan works and original writing is part of their collection policy. Everything. That's how archives work.
Librarian for 6+ years with an archival background, the entire premise of the initial argument is laughably untrue anyway.
Like yeah, a master's in library science is a prerequisite for most existing library/archival jobs, but any ham-and-egger who wants to start their own archive is allowed to do that, there's no High Council of Archivists who's going to swing by to check your credentials and shut you down if you're not properly licensed. The creators of the archive are highly qualified with the academic credentials to back it up, but even if they weren't Oakly would still be wrong.
Now, I am going to, obviously, default to the archivists, librarians, and people who specialize in archives and conservation work, so definitely listen to them!! I will instead share a practical example of why AO3 is so important, and how it impacts fandom studies research.
As a fandom studies scholar with an PhD in English (fandom studies, Manga / anime, and SF specialties), I send (or third, technically?) all these points, and will also add that part of why AO3 is so important is because its overarching group, the OTW, has a PHYSICAL ARCHIVE collaboration preserving fan materials at some universities.
For example, my University, The University of Iowa, is the home to multiple collections, one of which is an official partnership with the OTW. You don't have to be a student to come visit and request to see materials, or to have them scanned. This resource is UNHEARD OF when it comes to fan studies and media studies. I just went to Special Collections yesterday and got to check out some vintage Trigun Doujinshi! Star Wars Han/Luke zines from the 1970s, saved by a fan, Ming Wattne, from being thrown out by George Lucas himself! (She also turned her house into a zine library, for anyone curious.) Buffy gen Giles-centric h/c zines! One of Frank Miller's first comics!! All of these things are "fan materials," which is why they are in the collection, as over-affen-geil mentioned.
And it wouldn't exist without the efforts of archivists and people with degrees devoting their life's work to keeping the memories of fans of the past alive. People need to understand that the OTW and its founders, along with the archivists, scholars and librarians who are working with them, are doing INCREDIBLY important work for the conservation of media fandom, both online and in person.
But also! Seconding pitviperofdoom's reply as well — you don't need a university to make your own personal archive. You can make your own archive if you want!! No one is stopping you! Follow your heart!
This is not to derail, of course, but as someone who was quite literally just talking about why AO3 matters with my students yesterday, I couldn't help but chime in to add that, yes, there's also a physical aspect to AO3 that most people have no idea about, which I think is pretty cool.
i adore OTW and ao3. it's lovely to be reminded of the who, how, and why! but also:
these dismal trolls - who have no other interests or hobbies aside from 'Complaining On The Internet", do not deserve our time or attention. All these responses! So much effort!
we could have all replied with a "Sure Jan!" and gone on with our day.
I'd much rather the inspired responses we got than a "Sure Jan!"
This is the most I've learned about ao3 history ever and a small window into the world of librarians and archivists that I've thoroughly enjoyed.
Sure, trolls are stupid, why give them attention. Welp. Maybe they're ignorant. Maybe this is a time for patience and a good debate- maybe it is a teaching moment. So this person who is so flippant with their comment, or perhaps the people who come by after and see said comment, can have the opportunity to learn why that was such a silly comment to make all along.
The world will only be improved by sharing knowledge.
I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
Yeah, I used to considerbmyself a cynic at a younger age and it truly mede me miserable. Also I couldn't stand the apathy that it breeds in humans.
hard pill to swallow here but. the normal number of people to have their accounts removed from your platform, without being given any warning or an opportunity after the fact to request any kind of appeal, based solely off of the false reports being made by open and proud bigots and serial harassers, is none. that shouldnt be happening to anyone. and it certainly shouldn't be happening almost exclusively to an extremely vulnerable minority demographic, to the extent that it is noticeable and verifiable that this is the case. and in the event that all of that did happen, repeatedly and consistently, for months on end without reprieve, recourse, or restitution, you should probably have a response a little better than "oopsie woopsie im sorry you feel like we're targeting u tee hee! but please feel secure in the knowledge that we aren't doing any of that ^_^"
See, I actually really like the take that alien characters on Deep Space Nine (and also Discovery's first season) have that the Federation are basically like a sort of insidious, outwardly friendly, slow-motion version of the Borg Collective. I absolutely agree that it makes sense for certain outsiders to perceive them that way. But I also think that it's clearly not actually true; Earth is still Earth; Vulcan is still Vulcan; I assume that the other Federation world's would still be recognizably themselves if we had actually enough before-and-after data to compare them. You don't lose your culture just because it's only one of many.
I submit further than Michael Eddington, in particular, is just completely full of shit.

hey guys is there a nice wizard on tumblr or is it only the evil one
it’s just me
I'm nice! I don't really see myself primarily as a wizard though. Sure, I have a cauldron or two, shitloads of mysterious orbs, an Eldritch familiar, and I fight demons on the astral plane on the reg.
I majored in kleptomancy, minoring in Wizard arts (good luck getting a job with that! All the good vizier positions are taken by evil wizards) which used to be under the Wizard umbrella, but ever since the big shakeup it's been reclassified into Esoteric Mysticism. Whatever that fucking means; it's in the same category as crystal healing and evil Tarot (very different to normal Tarot.) SMH. Anywayyyy
So yeah, I'm a nice wizard-adjacent practitioner of black magic. Hope that helps. Personally I don't think the Evil Wizard is all that evil. Like great, you summoned Baphomet in the middle ages but what have you done lately? Please don't curse my bloodline for seven generations.
throwback to that time in my existentialism class where the professor asked ‘who thinks hell is other people’ and half the class slowly and meekly put their hand up
then the prof was like ‘…i mean who originally said it’
there are some posts that sound utterly made up for the joke or for the notes, but this one I whole heartedly believe
Sounds right to me…
That quote is amazing to me in that it’s quoted completely accurately and yet in a way that means something completely different from what it meant in context.
(Sartre was claiming that Hell was other people. He was not claiming that other people were hell.)
…I can’t actually tell what distinction you’re drawing there. Can you expand?
The line comes from No Exit, which is set in Hell. Spoilers for No Exit follow
In particular, three people who have been condemned to hell are trapped eternally in a room together. And at first they think they got off easy without any pitchforks or fiery lakes or anything. But over the course of the play they discover that they have been chosen very specifically to have neuroses and character flaws that interact with and torment each other.
Each one needs the approval of a second in an unstable RPS cycle so that any time one of them might be satisfied by a second, the third swoops in and ruins it.
And when they figure this out, one of the characters expresses his understanding, that hell isn’t physical torture. “Hell is just—other people.”
So the point isn’t that other people, generically, are hellish; it’s rather that you can build a hell out of other people.
But when I hear people quote it, it’s usually sort of an introvert-pride thing. “Other people are hell; you should spend time alone.” And that’s not the point at all. It’s a statement about how bad unhealthy relationships can be, not a statement about how all relationships are unhealthy!
See also Sartre’s own comment here:
“hell is other people” has always been misunderstood. It has been thought that what I meant by that was that our relations with other people are always poisoned, that they are invariably hellish relations. But what I really mean is something totally different. I mean that if relations with someone else are twisted, vitiated, then that other person can only be hell.
Reblogging for the original post which was hilarious and also for that explanation which is beautiful
Another big point in No Exit is that the characters find out at the end that the room they’re in is not locked. They could just leave, but they’re each of them incapable of just leaving without winning their arguments. So really, hell is when we stay in dysfunctional relationships that harm us, when we can’t just leave other people be and move on.
The way in which I’m now 75% sure this is exactly what the creators of The Good Place were riffing off of. Heck it’s been so long that for all I know Sartre is name dropped.
Sometimes I get to thinking again about the Affirmations of L. Ron Hubbard, this litany of confessions and hypnotic commands that were written and used by L. Ron Hubbard to try and make himself feel less scared and insecure. Reading them, you not only know absolutely everything about Hubbard’s fears and anxieties, but you also see that all of them are facets of human frailty. Hubbard was so terrified and disgusted by them that he told himself obvious lies—tried to talk himself out of his body’s aches and pains, insisted that his eyesight was perfect and he would live to be 200 years old, that he had a beautiful singing voice.
And I can’t help but think that this same desperately avoidant mindset is the same thing you see in these big tech CEOs right now who think they’ll live forever and be kings of the world. Maybe it’s not as obvious in them, but I think very often the dreams of eternal life and health and power are reflections of the same panic, the same suppressed scream. They want what they want because they’re terrified, and they’re all full of lies about what they do and how cool and powerful and smart they are.

my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade
