Went out to look for porcini or chanterelles and didnāt find any, but at least I found my favorite fungal organism! Scutellinia scutellata, the eyelash cup, is normally pretty rare in Utah but this is my second time finding it this year! this bunch was growing on a decaying branch in the middle of a stream.
Found a nice sized bunch of inkcap mushrooms. Collected them to render down into an ink! hopefully then i can use it for writing or drawing later.
Didnāt find any mushrooms, but did enjoy some Hawksbeard flowers that are still clinging to life! weāre at the end of wildflower season and nearing the end of mushroom season so every day we get outside is a good day indeed.
Russula so found on a recent foray

Weāre out here finding some beautiful red russulas! We also found out that they glow under a black light. Going to have to return at night to see it!
Lately I have been obsessed with the concept of using mushrooms and lichen to dye fibers with. I came across the Mushroom Color Atlas, created by Julie Beeler and her team, which is a wonderful reference and so so beautiful. I could not have imagined the colors you could get with mushrooms, especially the blues and purples. Each color will tell you the fiber the color was achieved on, the mordant used, the weight of mushroom to fiber, the freshness of and parts of mushroom used, the temperature the dye baths were brought to, and the period of time it was on heat, and the acidity the bath was brought to, if youāre interested in the process. Or you could just look at the amazing array of dye and pigment that were created by mushrooms
In this dynamic Mushroom Color Atlas, explore the colorful universe of fungi through the spectrum of colors from dyeing with mushrooms.
Some more photos of the Boletud edulis found during my latest foray!
Boletus can be spotted by seeing what looks like a potatoā¦. or a hamburger bun sticking out of the ground. They can grow bigger than a dinner plate too! On the underside of the cap they have pores instead of gills, and a reticulation netting-like pattern on the large and impressive stalk.
šBOLETUS EDULISš
Found our first King Bolete! Boletus edulis is probably the most sought-after mushroom in the world. itās a prized edible nearly everywhere in the northern hemisphere. We got very wet and dirty trying to find this one in a flooded meadow, but managed to walk away with 3!
Went on a big foray with the mushroom club! Will post photos of the mushrooms found and talk about some of the things I learned later.

BIG orange sponge polypore growing on the side of this fallen log.
i needed to see some good slime this morning and manifested this nice big patch of Oligonema verrucosum š
How can you tell a bolete from other mushrooms? While most mushrooms have gills on the under side of the cap, mushrooms in the bolete family have spongy pores that release spores instead!
do you have any random fungi facts? i crave knowledge/silly
of course i do :-)
prototaxites : "aĀ genusĀ of terrestrial fossilĀ fungiĀ dating from theĀ middle ordovicianĀ until the lateĀ devonianĀ periods, approximatelyĀ 470Ā toĀ 360Ā million years ago."
these ancient organisms - the largest land-dwelling organism of its time - were recently verified to be fungi !!
they grew up to 1 metre (3ft) wide & 8 metres (26ft) in height.
is there an overlap between fungi lovers & bug/insect lovers?
yeah<3 i love both so sososo so much.
no... (i love fumgus but not bugs)
nooo- (i love bugga but not fungi)

Gorgeous young Amanita muscaria someone found on a recent foray! My first Amanita š Ours arenāt bright red like the popular š is, but a rather muted yellowish tan.
Couple of different slime molds I found while on a foray earlier this summer! These are two different Dog Vomit Slime Molds, or Fuligo septica.
Weirdly enough this might be my favorite slime mold, only because of its garish looking appearance. If you sit and watch them long enough you can see them move as they search around the forest floor for food!
