In the desert

I saw a creature, naked, bestial,

Who, squatting upon the ground,

Held his heart in his hands,

And ate of it.

I said, “Is it good, friend?”

“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it

“Because it is bitter,

“And because it is my heart.”

A single thread of fireworks exploded in the empty streets,

Two voices rose, their shouts sharp with anticipation.

Like a candle flickering in a cavern, the hollow silence

Roared louder than the bursting light.

Not a cry of patriotic glee,

But a celebration of a King who came to set them free—

Not from fate, nor from the weight of past transgressions,

But from enemies, both real and imagined.

I watched from the upstairs window,

Alone, as I whispered a sorrowful prayer into the night.
