Do you know these times when you’re sitting in front of your textbook, trying to learn these boring af vocabs you’ve seen 1000 times but still can’t remember and just wish to do something different (or hoping that the world explodes so you can at least stop)?
Well, there are more ways to learn a language and I think because we just learned how we “should” learn a language at school, we’re limited in creativity. Thanks to school it’s hard to think outside of this “textbook, vocab lists, tests, etc.” stuff but there are ENDLESS things you can do to learn a language.
Remember: everything you do in your native language, you can try to do in your target language!
This is for all the people who are tired and exhausted, who are thinking about quitting or don’t have fun with their target language anymore.
DON’T YOU DARE TO GIVE UP! YOU’VE COME SO FAR!
_____________________________________________
Examples for different ways of learning a language:
write a diary
summarise an article about a topic you like (cooking, fitness, etc.)
listen to a podcast/radio
listen to music (while reading the lyrics)
try to sing along with music
read out loud while reading a book/magazine/blog/etc.
watch movies/series/videos
record videos in your target language or about how studying is going (progress, problems, etc.)
write a blog (well hello there :))
use apps that make it more fun (duolingo, memrise, lingodeer)
chat with native speakers
actually talk to native speakers ( I know what a crazy idea)
read websites about things you’re interested in
use social media only available in your target language
change the language of your smartphone
change the language of your pc
change the language of your life
play games in your target language (like not necessarily for learning it, I mean just playing a normal game IN your target language)
take online lessons with teachers that make you forget you’re learning
do a challenge! (I love this one so much)
find a learning group
be active in forums (no matter about language learning or a forum in your target language)
find a language exchange partner. (You should, seriously.)
watch lessons on youtube
read a (children-)book (with audio)
talk to yourself
think in your target language (a fun way is to tell a story about your life while it’s happening like “I went down the road with a stranger always behind me, who could it be? What does he want? It got quiet… too quiet. I tried to keep calm but was it really a coincidence? All in the middle of nowhere?” I know I’m bad at this but I hope you get what I mean, think of it like reading a book.)
learn vocabs with pictures, type in the word you want to know and ONLY look for pictures, try to feel the word. If you google for “strawberry” (in your target language and don’t know what it means) look at the pictures, the colours, how could it smell? Make a sentence with the new word. When was the last time you ate it? How was it?
Write a story/book online or just for yourself.
Make a mindmap
Use a topic jar (a jar where you put in notes with different topics on it, you take one every day and write/talk about it)
use social media to find groups interested in learning a new language or your target language
translate texts and act like you’re a famous translator who’s the only person on earth who can translate your target language (for example if you’re reading articles about historical stuff, act like you’re the only one who can find out what happened back then and the whole world is counting on you!)
try to solve random online tests
listen to a song/audiobook/whatever and write down what you hear
search for words you want to learn and build up (funny!) sentences with them or even whole stories
read comics/mangas/etc.
search for receipts in your target language and pray to god you’re doing it right… if not, well you won’t forget the vocab again. Win-win situation. :p
search for language learning groups near your living place and actually meet them (stay safe and check everything before)
listen to children songs (I still remember the first children song I learned in English lessons… like… 11 years ago in 5th grade) these songs are supposed to stick… *cough* head shoulders knees and toes knees and toes *cough* sorry where was I?
connect with language learners over Skype (useful groups of course like German trying to learn French, Frenchman trying to learn Turkish, Turk trying to learn German)
write a list (you know… like I do right know so I don’t forget English)
describe things you see (more fun with a partner)
teach your target language to others
listen to audio while sleeping
take notes in your target language (I don’t mean for grammar rules or something like that, I mean notes you would take in your native language anyway)
write a letter (so much better than an e-mail)
write an e-mail (who has time for letters)
learn rimes
learn jokes (it’s also useful for social interaction)
talk to your pets (at least if they listen to you, if I start to talk to my cat she starts yelling into my face)
translate songs and learn the vocab of it so you have more fun listening to it later
think about a topic and write down every word you can think of and then translate them into your target language

Korean Fast Track 1
This is meant to be challenging. I’ll be posting more resources over time while I do this myself, keep that in mind. The goal is to be around B1, kind of in the sweet spot between A2-B1 or approaching B1 by the end of this. But don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t by the end!
NOTE: The quizzes currently have a response limit because of the site used but I am currently working on replacing them with different links & printouts <3 If you run into an issue and need me to send you the quiz questions, just let me know.
Make sure you read all the additional text here carefully as there’s a whole lot of resources coming!
Things you’ll need:
A language learning app that includes Korean. I don’t care what app you use but it needs to have grammar and vocabulary. Like duolingo, lingodeer etc! You choose. You’ll be doing the light workload on this app.
Flashcard app! Anki and quizlet are the top two.
Basic supplies for taking notes & learning like a notebook and a pen. If you want to do these digitally, go for it.
Hinative or Hellotalk! These are apps/sites to speak with native speakers, ask questions, and get help with pronunciation.
If you do not know how to read the Korean alphabet, learn that before you start this fast track. It can be done in less than three hours.
Talk to me in korean (TTMIK) account
How to study korean (HTSK)
Daily tasks:
One small lesson on your language app, best done in the morning right after you’ve woken up and started your day.
Listen to a short audio in Korean 1-5 times per day. This can be a song or you can watch a whole ass k-drama episode. I don’t care what it is lol!
Vocab vocab vocab! Go through your vocabulary flashcards ONCE OR TWICE every day! use the “learn” option on quizlet for easier learning. (You should be reviewing the vocabulary for that day twice per day, not ALL of your collective vocab.)
Week One Assignments:
Do this in whatever order you’d like, but leave the quiz & end of week assignment for the end. ABBREVIATIONS: HN/HT = hinative/hellotalk
TTMIK Level 1 : All 26 Lessons ! I personally don’t listen to them, I just read the lesson. This is up to you, I recommend taking light notes
HTSK Unit 1 Lessons 1-8 Vocabulary; Put all of the given vocabulary words into your flashcard app / make flashcards and run through them. Use this site to help explain things that you might not completely understand from TTMIK as HTSK is more in depth.
6 pronunciation posts on HN/HT for critique, provide a dialogue typed out so they’re aware of what you’re trying to say.
Watch Test your Korean Listening Level 1 and evaluate.
End of week assignment: Review all of your vocabulary once and take the Week One Quiz !
Week Two Assignments:
Refer back to week one’s assignments if you have issues figuring out how you’re supposed to use certain sites. For this week we are going to be doing the same thing we did last week with TTMIK and HTSK!
TTMIK Level 2 : All 30 Lessons ! Vocab & Notes
HTSK Unit 1 Lesson 9; Vocabulary & Refresh
3 pronunciation posts on HN/HT for critique; provide dialogue.
2 text posts on HN/HTto be corrected by natives; must be at least 4 sentences.
Reply to 5 native Korean’ speakers on HN/HT
Watch Test your Korean Listening Level 1 and evaluate again.
Listen to your favorite Disney song in Korean
Watch 12 Grammar Points In One Sentence and take a few notes.
Read This Post ; Take notes & Create a flashcard set (learn them)
End of week assignment: Review all of your vocabulary, refresh on any grammar you’re uncomfy with Week Two Quiz! (this one is tiny)
Week Three Assignments:
Get ready to cram some phrases and such in this week. This week is all about progress with speaking. You’ll be focusing on learning how to create sentences that make sense & gathering the necessary vocabulary and grammar to do that is a train wreck. Buckle up.
TTMIK Level 3 : All 30 Lessons! Vocab & Notes
HTSK : Only used to clarify what you don’t understand with TTMIK
Korean Slang Post : Make flashcards and learn
Korean Ordering Post : Make flashcards and learn
Write down everything you do one day (e.g. watch tv, go to the bathroom, cook) you need at LEAST 10 things. Now write it in Korean. Learn these phrases and words.
Post 5 pronunciation posts to HN/HT for critique
Reply to 15 natives in Korean on HN/HT
Post 7 text posts on HN/HT that must be 4 sentences or more. Try to use the vocabulary you’ve learned this week. If you don’t know how to say it/write it, look it up and add it to your notes and flashcards
Make a flashcard deck for the food you commonly eat.
Watch Test Your Korean Listening Level 2 and evaluate
Watch 30 Fun and Useful Korean Phrases and learn what you can.
End of week assignment: Review all of your vocabulary, refresh on your grammar. No quiz yet! It’s on the way!
Week Four Assignments:
Home stretch for this damned thing. It might be a little intense but it’s necessary for progression. Be prepared to do a LOT of practice. We’re once again heading towards sentence building.
TTMIK Level 4 : All 30 lessons. Vocabulary & Notes.
TTMIK Level 5: Lessons 1-5. Notes.
HTSK is used for clarification on stuff you don’t understand & vocab if you need it.
Post at least one text post to HN/HT per day in Korean with at least 3 sentences. Adding a picture gives it extra flavor keke
Reply to at least 3 people per DAY on HN/HT in Korean.
One pronunciation post per DAY on HN/HT with dialogue for critique
Watch an episode of something or a korean youtuber in korean without subtitles, you don’t need to pay attention but it needs to be in the background. Do this once per day.
Review vocabulary and brush up on any grammar you’re having trouble with.
Watch 30 Advanced Korean Words and learn them.
Try to “test unlock” levels on duolingo/lingodeer/whatever app you use to see how far you’ve advanced.
No quiz yet! It’s on the way!
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:
They’re not super aesthetically pleasing, sorry! I don’t have time to spend an hour per worksheet right now OTL. I’ll make more and keep updating this post! <3
Week One Korean “Write in the blank” Worksheet
Week One Korean Vocabulary Worksheet (KEY)
Week One Korean Worksheet 2
Week Two Anagram Game! (Scroll down! The other two have some glitches because of the Korean uwu)
I also recommend This Study App ! I’ll be uploading all of the notes, PDFs, etc here :D This way even if you can’t print it out you CAN annotate the PDF, have my flashcards, notes, summaries etc!
Here’s the Study Group Link to the App mentioned above! All notes, flashcards, etc will be there as resources for everyone. I recommend making your own flashcards on quizlet/anki/here too but if you don’t have time to make all of them, I will be making resources available
QUIZLET FLASHCARD SETS (in progress, will update over time)
I found THIS PDF of TTMIK levels 1-9 :D If you can’t study online daily, download this so you don’t have to download ALL of them individually
If this is too difficult don’t push yourself too hard. Don’t be afraid to search tumblr for fun stuff too! This is supposed to be a fun challenge !!!
Make sure you come back to my blog for all the post updates for more material like games, worksheets, flashcards, etc !

LANGUAGE-SANCTUARY LANGBLR CHALLENGE
This is my personal method to language studying, I thought it would be helpful. A link to a PDF can be found here
How this works:
Language studying consists of fours skills: writing and speaking (active skills) and reading and listening (passive skills). I have compiled a list of language learning activities that provide a comprehensive approach to those fours skills and can be useful to visual, auditory or kinesthesic learners (or a mix).
You can set an estimate of the points you’ll get in week or day, or even try to improve a previous score.
You can try to go though the list in order
You can print the list, stick it to the wall and throw darts at it, just have fun!
If you use this, please tag it as #karenstudymethod or tag @language-sactuary so I can see the posts!

10 movies I watched in Chinese class
This post is the unofficial sequel to 10 iconic Mandopop songs from Chinese class. No one asked for it, but I watched to chronicle what I could remember before more fades from my memory! I saw these movies in Chinese class in high school and college, and I had to do some sleuthing to find some names.
The synopses are from IMDb, revised by me. I put links to watch for free on YouTube when I was able to find one, but they might not work in your country.
1. 《和你在一起》 Together (2002) A violin prodigy and his father travel to Beijing, where the father seeks the means to his son's success while the son struggles to accept the path laid before him.
Watch on YouTube
2. 《谁的青春不迷茫》 Yesterday Once More (2016) Lin Tianjiao, the top student in her class, is struggling to cope under intense academic pressure. After she is nearly caught cheating on a test, she befriends Gao Xiang, a free-spirited slacker.
Watch on YouTube
3. 《活着》 To Live (1994) Based on the novel by Yu Hua, four generations of the once-wealthy Xu family experience the difficult changes of the Chinese Civil War, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution.
Watch on YouTube
4. 《喜宴》 The Wedding Banquet (1993) To satisfy his parents, Gao Wai-Tung, a gay man in a fulfilling relationship with his partner Simon, marries his female tenant Wei-Wei. Things get out of hand when his parents come to visit.

From ”ChineseClass101″. Those have characters with the option simplified/traditional, pinyin and english translation.
