The last bit of sunlight shines through the dismal clouds, while we reflect on our uncommon journey. We know we’ll be moving onto another chapter very soon, but this experience will surely remain a passenger on every adventure to come.

On our return to Reykjavik, we recall an iconic site told to us by the locals. Giving into our curiosity, we pull off of the highway and shift into an off-road mentality, challenging the sticky, volcanic black sand of Sólheimasandur Beach.

After monumental miles, we reach our destination of Jökulsárlón. We wait until the last minutes of our time here for the #AuroraBorealis to show itself. It’s then that we witness an experience like none other, their casual arrival dancing over the glacier lagoon.

The stark landscape & historical sites of Skaftafell will remain captured in our mind forever.

Kirkjubæjarklaustur, locally referred to as Klaustur, sheds light on our path as we set our sights ahead toward Skaftafell.

We are immediately drawn to the fairyland feel that Vík emulates. It is here that we go beyond the Ring Road to explore the wet terrain of the Black Sand Beach, before moving onward to Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

We follow the coordinates 63°31′47″N 19°30′50″W, which brings us alongside the Skóga River in the south of Iceland. Legend has it that treasure lies behind the Skógafoss waterfall, but we see priceless value in its view.

We answer Iceland’s 15-minute weather changes with Terrain Response, making sure we put Hellisheiði Pass’s lava plateau to the test.

Upon reaching Gunnuhver’s steam vents on the southwest part of Reykjanes, we reflect on the meaning of this journey and what lies ahead.

Iceland’s main highway, the Ring Road, carries us onward toward the Gunnuhver steam vents. There we hope to find a preview of what will make this journey last a lifetime.

A fishing town at the Southern Peninsula, by the name of Grindavík, welcomes us with clear skies once we arrive. When in unfamiliar territory, it’s best to just open up and absorb our surroundings.

As we set forth on our journey to see a true world phenomenon, a “so long” is passed to those in Reykjavik who sent us. Over 250 miles of highway, snow, sand and marsh now lie in front of our path to the Northern Lights.

The road is a bed of roses from here.
