hi! sorry but i have a kinda controversial question to ask. i was wondering what your response is to haters who call lando a tr*mper? i'm new-ish to f1 (just became a fan last winter) and my friends keep joking about me being the same by extension just for liking lando. 🙄 it also always seems to be a top reason for why a lot of people hate on him too so i'm curious how you argue against that. thanks in advance if you decide to answer this! 🙂
First of all- hello and welcome!
Second of all- I think it would be naive to assume every man on the grid isn’t at least somewhat conservative by virtue of the money they make, so just putting that out there. HOWEVER, that doesn't make them Trumpers by default.
If you're not familiar, the reason haters label Lando as a Trumper stems from the post-race press conference in Miami 2024. Trump went to the race because it's in his back yard, and the FIA requested McLaren to let them use their garage to usher him through since they were closest to the entrance/exit he was going to use. So it already looked meh. Post-race though, Trump was there to congratulate Lando on winning the race and his first GP. A couple of icky photos were taken, and then Lando's swept off to the press. The moment a lot of haters focus on were his words in the press conference. Below is a screenshot of the question and answer from the press conference (of fucking course it's Daily Mail too) .
A lot of people neglect the first half of Lando saying "He said he's my lucky charm," and think Lando said "Trump's my lucky charm," which is NOT what he said. The second half of the response makes me cringe still, icl, but I have thoughts on the context as a whole still.
First of all, Lando is a professional in his work environment who was presented with a visitor wanting to congratulate him. He's not going to ignore someone, especially when it could have workplace repercussions.
Second of all, the presidency is supposed to be something to be revered and respected. The president is the highest office in the US. So, Lando saying it's an honor to meet someone of such power (even formerly at that point) isn't that surprising when he's not directly impacted by what Trump was doing in his first term. Truthfully, I think a lot of the second half of his comments are focused around this point.
Third of all, Lando was high off his mind with adrenaline and joy and every positive emotion on the planet following his first win. And we know he's long-winded in press conferences and can put his foot in his mouth on occasion. Could he have picked his words better, sure, but context matters.
And finally, he's not an American citizen, and he's probably not that involved in politics if we're being honest. Trump (especially at that time) was still a joke to a lot of people who don't live in the US. He wasn't (and maybe still isn't, idk) someone to be taken seriously even after January 6th. So to some people not in the US, he's a spectacle. And meeting a spectacle when you're hopped up on adrenaline can be something to laugh about. There's a reason Trump won both times he has.
TLDR: Lando is probably not a Trumper, but people like to use one isolated moment out of context in order to try and paint him as a horrible person. And when you ask them why, they hardly ever want to give the full evidence much less have anything after that to present as fact. Meanwhile others on the grid (some of whom are retired) have said equally if not more damning things about political figures.
