Starblade alpha is a home version of the arcade game, and gives two options: The original arcade mode with solid coloured polygons, or a new improved mode with textured polygons.
This would be a cool addition, but the real problem is that the game uses the digital Playstation d-pad and has a low framerate, which really doesn’t work well for a fast-paced arcade rail shooter. The game is near unplayable unless you enter a secret code for rapidfire lasers.
I’m glad they made it possible to play the arcade classic, but it certainly has its flaws! This was one of the first arcade games I saw that felt like a cinematic experience rather than a skill-based experience.
Thankfully there was an arcade-perfect version included as an unlockable on Tekken 5, which is one of the best ways to play it these days. There was also a Japanese-only Wii Virtual Console release, which was one of the very few VC releases to use the Wiimote's pointer. In recent years Namco did a version of it for their Namco Arcade app on iOS/Android, based on said VC version, and is probably the only game on there to actually be suited perfectly for touch controls. Haven't checked if said app is still available, tho.
Never actually saw the arcade original, though by the time I started going to arcades it was probably a bit outdated, especially compared to some of the other stuff out there.

Wait what the hell does M mean for you guys?
I’ve honestly never seen that kind of rating system before, so I’m assuming it’s some European rating, because the game disc itself says PEGI 12+ which is what I’m more familiar with.
It's the Australian rating; IIRC the M would be an equivalent to the ESRB T or the PEGI 12+. Guess they didn't want to do more than one label, considering they got the PEGI, Australian and German ratings on there.
I haven’t played any PSP games in a long time, but I’ve just noticed that PPSSPP has updated for those who do, apparently with much better speed!
Oh, that’s neat! How is compatibility/graphics accuracy (especially in 3D games)?
It’s been a while since I last tried anything, but last I did it was really impressive!
I briefly played Monster Hunter in it which ran fine, but fell apart when saving/loading states mid-game. It seems reliable enough to play games normally though.
Switching between openGL and DirectX can really change how games run. Also some games don’t like upscaling very much. Granted even on my low end PC plently of games ran at 100% with little to no graphical glitches (since I believe its more CPU based).
Oh, I’ll have to try out different rendering next time around to see how that affects things!
The Vulkan option has a notable performance boost as well, though I think there's a few games that have slight issues that don't appear on OpenGL/DirectX modes. It's very rare, though, and the only one I've seen it happen on (that I remember) is EA Replay, and only on the menu anyway.

so i was talking to my grandmother about old-school video games and she was all “y'know there was one game i used to play, and it had like a maze, and it was underground, and there was a guy in first person and he had a weapon” so knowing her penchant for puzzle games, i started guessing like myst, or legend of grimrock so we start hunting through these 90’s-era games featuring dungeon crawls. turns out. it was not a puzzle game. it was nothing close to a puzzle game. apparently, in the mid-90s, my grandmother would sit down and play fucking Wolfenstein 3D and listen to AC/DC for like hours on end.

Borderlands 3 with 2018 internet culture will be absolutely terrifying. Guns that say oh worm each time you reload. A quest based entirely on fidget spinners. A grenade called big mood or something. You know damn well this will all be there
