Lana's art

A little experimental piece I did the other day, I didn’t take the face too seriously I just wanted to test out different pens and paints and shading techniques to capture he way the light hits the face. It turned out in a comic style I think because I’ve got so used to drawing on the graphics tablet.

Blake is a sensitive character with a strong intuition. She is confident in her actions and judgement. She wears a smart suit but keeps it more ‘layed back’ with her buttons undone. Blake was my favourite character to design, I really like how her outfit and face turned out. Since this is a new style for me it was fun to create these designs. It was difficult using the graphics tablet that I have since I’m still new to that to. It would have been great to do this project after I had a lot of experience. 

Harris has a bold character, is stern and shouldn't be favoured by the audience. He should be seen as arrogant. He wears smart clothing and is well groomed. Since this character is supposed to be unlikeable, I made the design so that I didn’t like it so from a visual point of view someone might see it the same as me and dislike it to. I think it came out well, but I drew him with a smug face and a judgemental face to get the point across. 

kev’s character is accused of murder, he is a young man that wears casual clothing given to him at the police station because his original clothing was covered in blood. His personality is cold and withdrawn.  I love how the face came out with this design. In this project I wanted to get a better understanding of light, character design and proportions and personally I feel that I have improved a lot. I have a better understanding of how light hits objects.

This is from the final scene where the male character has been arrested but the woman is the one who should be in his place, this can be hinted at by her striped clothing.

To create these i have to have multiple layers and drawings of the characters, some can be reused to capture the right movement and expression in the characters is can only be improved if individual drawings are made. The background style is a little messy bit it helps my characters stand out more. There is a lot i could improve on, I think if I work on a project like this again I’ll spend a lot more time on character designs.

This work has taken me a lot more effort than I had originally thought. Since I’m making work for other people, I feel like my work won’t be good enough so I’ve ended up procrastinating a lot lately. These are some of the main shots for the questioning scene, I have also created a document with different mouths, eyes and limbs that can be moved for the animator to create movement. 

A final design draft for one of the characters in the film I'm working on. These  characters are kev lewis and james harris. I am working on stupid clip paint with a graphics tablet. 

Another completed piece to go with my watercolour portraits. This one, for me, shows how sadness and grief turning into anger.

Update: My team have chosen Blakes design (woman at the bottom) to be their preferred style so I will be redesigning the other characters in that style, then starting the storyboarding.

I’m looking forward to completing this project by the end of April. My team are very kind and informative, great to work with. This project means I can continue with portraiture but in a different way and show my skills in illustration and using different software. I will also be doing fine art experiments along side this project but for this module this will be my main source of work. I can explore lighting, expressions and angles to create moods, foreshadow events and tell deeper meanings through my art which is what my intentions were with my portraits.

Another painting inspired by max moser, I based this painting of mixed emotions and anxiety caused by love. Unlike moser I used pencil to illustrate my portraits but I like to add water colour in a simular way that he does. I like how this turned out, I think the colours compliment each other.

 I had an idea of a person hiding wrapped in thorns and asked a few friends what they saw. A close friend of mine said 'I see someone who is afraid and hurting' and another another who said 'someone who is trapped inside their mind'. I was successful in creating an image that portrayed a similar idea but could be understood in different ways. This is exactly what I was going for. So I will continue to create artworks like this in greater detail. I want to redraw this or paint it.
