also thinking about how all of this is in pursuit of giving michael the treatment he was never afforded in life i.e. dignity, celebration (he always was by his fans, but not the world as a whole towards the end of his life) and the bare minimum we can do for any fellow human being which is treat them as simply that, a person and not an entity, a brand or worst of all a caricature reflecting what was always a product of the world's inability to accept a successful black man who wouldn't bend to the will of what people kept telling him he should be
jaafar was 12 years old when his uncle passed away, of no age to be able to grasp all of the things that had happened to michael and ultimately led to his death. he could have just watched some live performances, let the hair & costume experts work their magic and relied on the physical similarities to all carry his performance but instead he chose to learn everything; not just about michael's appearance and mannerisms and the history of his career but how he felt and what he experienced in his loneliest moments. he stepped into a treacherous place for this role and had to not only wrestle with another person's pain but i can only imagine his own personal grief. this whole project was a love letter, a nephew saying to an uncle now beyond his reach, “i couldn't be there for you then, but i am now, and i won't fail you like the rest of the world did.”
