The Soviet space program celebrated in vintage matchbox art.
In 1957, a Soviet street dog named Laika launched into space aboard Sputnik-2 and became the first animal to orbit the Earth.
This is her story.
TODAY IN HISTORY: Soviet space dogs Belka and Strelka became the first canines to fly in space and return safely to Earth, August 19, 1960.

Strelka and pups

me, shoving dogs into suitcases: sign me the FUCK up
Belka and Strelka, the first of the Soviet space dogs to go into orbit and return alive. They spent a day in space on August 19, 1960 before safely returning to Earth.
A variety of animals were sent into space: dogs, chimps, monkeys, rats and mice. Of all these early space pioneers, Laika was the only traveler whose safe return to earth was not accommodated. Sputnik 2 was a hastily organized flight, launched only one month after the unmanned Sputnik 1 in October of 1957. The need to launch Sputnik 2 so soon after Sputnik 1 was due to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's insistence that the Soviets celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution on Nov. 7, 1957 with a second, ground-breaking space flight. Having only one month to prepare, the Soviet rocket scientists cut corners in order to accommodate Khrushchev's deadline; Laika paid a tragic price for a purely political purpose.
First in Orbit, Laika the Dog Made History

Strelka and her puppies. Pushinka, one of Strelka’s pups, was actually gifted to John F. Kennedy by Nikita Khrushchev in 1961 and went on to have her own pups with a Kennedy dog named Charlie (resulting in the joking name ‘pupniks’)
Dezik (Дезик, "Deodorant") and Tsygan (Цыган, "Gypsy") were the first dogs to make a sub-orbital flight on 22 July 1951. Both dogs were recovered unharmed after travelling to a maximum altitude of 110 km. Dezik made another sub-orbital flight in July 29, 1951 with a dog named Lisa, although neither survived because the parachute failed to deploy. After the death of Dezik, Tsygan was adopted as a pet by Soviet physicist Anatoli Blagonravov. (x)
everything i do, i do for laika
Laika as depicted on the Monument to the Conquerors of Space, erected in Moscow in 1964.
Soviet postage stamp honoring space dogs Ugolyek and Vyetyerok.
Their names mean “Little Coal” and “Little Breeze,” respectively.
They spent 22 days of 1966 orbiting the earth.
It’s a record never broken by dogs and not broken by humans for seven years.

Ugolyok, who flew with Veterok. They were the 8th and 9th dogs in space
I’m not a painter so this isn’t the greatest but I did a 2 hour study of laika (the first dog in space)
