It's a list of my popular posts, so if you just follow me here, you can catch up. A puzzle! A smart cousin! Walking all the way around SF! Etc.!
Here are some of my popular posts from 2025. Now I can post a link to this post on the various social networks where I'm 99% dormant so folk
today's word fact: there's two terms that contain two pairs of double c's. they're BOCCACCIO (an italian name) and ACCIACCATURA (a slashed grace note); the two double c's in each word are pronounced differently (one is a "ch" sound and one is a "k" sound), and the order is reversed between the two terms

Here are three popular blog posts from 2024: I see the NYT Tech Guild went on strike, so this might be a good time for me to post links to

Googles, reads Wikipedia for a minute
Yeah, that checks out.
genuinely cant stop thinking about whatever early human first looked a literal wolf full in the face and thought domestication would be fun but ALSO cant stop thinking about the ENTIRE early human tribe that absolutely did NOT think to stop them

Slightly related: I read a book by Rick McIntyre, who was official Wolf Guy at Yellowstone Park for 25 years (and studied wolves for 40 yrs total). He describes how, when they’re alone, wolves—both adults and pups—will pick up sticks or bones or bits of animal skin and toss them around to entertain themselves, the way you might toss a ball up and down. They essentially play catch by themselves.
So if wolves do this by themselves, in nature, that means that we saw them playing this game and thought “huh, that wolf enjoys fetching the stick it’s throwing for itself, maybe I could throw it further and it would like that more?” And thus began our two species’ mutual favourite game to play together
But the point is that they invented fetch
they made fetch happen

donuts (2024 remake)
revisiting a grid i put together in 2023 with some new(er) perspective. i still really like the theme on this one and wanted to dust it up a bit now that i have 10 more grids worth of experience
try it on crosshare here: https://crosshare.org/crosswords/wPfBpyCTznwFan6i7jLA/donuts-2024-remake
i won't post a solution for this one, but since the original puzzle was designed to be pretty hard, i wrote a set of more straightforward clues in case you need some small hints. those are under the spoiler break:

Goth kids held the line So long. And I, complacent, Thought they always would.
I shut down the automatic service that theoretically copied my blog posts from my blog to tumblr. It's been buggy lately: when I post to my blog, that automatic service copies that post… and several older posts, though they'd already been tumblr-ified.
Should I hand-copy my blog posts to Tumblr, kinda like how I hand-copy them to some other socials? I think ?maybe? everyone who tumblr-follows me also Mastodon-follows me, so maybe there's not much point? I confess I haven't even figured out the tumblr UI well enough to figure out who follows me on here. Wow, that automatic-copying service sure made it easy for me to bumble along without ever learning much about tumblr.

Down at the Waller Street skate park this morning: a memorial to Zion Williams, a skateboarder who kept skateboarding after being blinded. (In theory that's a gift link and should get you past the paywall; in practice, the news site might still ask for an email or some other such nonsense.)
Can you imagine a loop more doomed than #SanFrancisco? You cannot; it is impossible.
When was the last time someone washed those cacti? The neglect is inestimable.
I updated the lists of "popular" phrases and words over on the phraser page. These new lists have fresh data from Wikipedia and some other wikis. Perhaps making the biggest difference between this update and prior lists: The Doctor Who fandom.com wiki had their data available, so I grabbed that. So if you grab this newer list, you'll see the phrase the daleks shows up much higher in the rankings than it used to.
I've also been feeding in some lyrics, but apparently not enough to make a dent. The phrase bad bitches to the left does not appear in the phrase list; I consider that a bug. I guess in a project like this, there will always be room for improvement.
As Twitter continues to implode, I have set up yet another social account, this one on Bluesky: @lahosken.bsky.social.
If you're on Bluesky and you'd like to follow me, as of today, you can. I reckon I'll be copy-pasting blog posts there as I do on Mastodon. Will there be a different tone of discussion? Let's find out.
Welcome to #SanFrancisco, where it's all decline all the time.

If you let your eyes unfocus, you might convince yourself this license plate is a palindrome:
(Safety note: please don't let your eyes unfocus while crossing the street in front of motor vehicles, thank you)
A #SanFrancisco mystery: What happened to the middle Doggie Diner head on JFK Promenade? On my morning exercise walk, I was surprised to see that one of the Doggie Diner heads was missing, replaced with a sort of whirling windvane mobile art thingy.
If you're not sure what I mean by Doggie Diner heads, I've got a picture from last year showing all three. (Two are still there today, at least when I walked past earlier this morning.)
When I was there, I checked for a ransom note. Nope, nothing. I checked the SF Chronicle website, they had no info, nada.
Finally, I tried a news search and found the answer at SF Gate "Remembering when a group of SF punks took a city landmark on a cross-country road trip":
…A 10-foot-tall Doggie Diner head propped up on the back of a pickup greeted crowds as they gathered around the 118-year-old Savoy Tivoli, the quintessential neighborhood bar and restaurant that finally reopened in December after a long hiatus. Amid the unusual scene, it didn’t take long to spot notorious San Francisco artist and eccentric John Law.…
…It might seem like a herculean task to transport just one of the 300-pound roadside attractions across the city from their current home on John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park. But it’s nothing compared with 20 years ago, when a group of San Francisco punks, burlesque dancers and rodeo clowns affiliated with the DIY art bike collective Cyclecide went on a cross-country road trip with all three of them. The eight-day voyage from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge is the subject of “Head Trip,” a 2003 documentary co-directed by Law and skateboard videographer Flecher Fleurdujon that will soon be available to stream on YouTube and was shown to a public audience Wednesday for the first time in years.…
[Updated to add:] Alas, that's not the end of the story. When I posted on Mastodon, Doug Tobacco posted a link to Doctor Popular who posted a link to (artist) John Law's Instagram post:
Just before the show in North Beach, we were informed that some psycho had burned one of the two Dog Heads that was in Golden Gate Park. We will probably have to take the two remaining Dogs out of the park and back home to their kennel. It's just too much of a risk.
