Hello, friends!
Itâs Meg with Part 2 of our two part TUTOR TUESDAY, where we look at expressions. If you missed it, you can find Part 1 here where we discuss specifics of the mouth.  If you have any recommendations for a tutorial, let me know here or on my personal blog! Keep practicing, have fun and Iâll see you next week!
Do you still go on iscribble? I think i've watched every speed paint you have up there and they're so mesmerizing. I love how they go from just blobs of colour and value into these epic compositions. I envy your storytelling and would love to know what would be best in terms of giving art more "umph" or feeling? The comic you did with Orianna and Blitz or the one with Kindred and Soraka, they're FULL of emotion and always make me feel something. Love you art to death :)
Hiya! I pop on iS every now and then, but I donât use it for sketching anymore.. the new HTML shift kinda changed the feel of its response, and Iâm just more comfortable working in Photoshop. Glad you like the replays though, itâs a great feature for sure.
There are multiple things that contribute to storytelling in an illustration/comic: Frame composition, shapes within the frame, camera lens, camera position, lighting, colour, props/background. And then thereâs the characters themselves with body language, gesture and expression(acting). Alot of this study is closely tied to cinema!
Pushing for emotional impact often rely on camera placement and framing/shot size to âput you in the momentâ or âin someoneâs shoesâ. Colour and value(and every other element/principle of art) helps direct your eye and can enhance the emotions even more.

What I like to first do when working on a scene is to decide what part of the story/moment appeals to me the most, then work toward selling that scene. Itâs a highly subjective process and everyone has their personal way of composing from the same idea, the challenge comes in leaving a strongest impression.
The Blitz/Ori comic was really bare- simple render/lighting, no backgrounds, alot of close-ups. But its simplicity helped immerse you in the scene more, since the characters and their emotion(or lack of) are the focus of the story. (but this doesnât work all the time, context is very important). The frames lead the viewerâs eye, and you have to be conscious of what visual information youâre putting in(or leaving out).
I left the general palette muted and dull to synergize with the mood, and let the colour blue be the contrast colour of the light(life). Iâm not always aware of what Iâm doing, but the more you understand what you need, the more you can design your work to be successful.
I canât tell you how to UMPH a piece of art in the best way- there are only multiple variations with different focuses. Build your own visual library of artwork like illustrations or screenshots from film/comics that you find interesting. Learn the conventions that artists use by breaking down an image to its elements. Youâll start seeing patterns everywhere. And if thatâs difficult, just look around online for blogs/tutorials/studies where smart people explain the thing for you.
Good luck! Practice alot! And constantly ask friends/people for feedback. They donât have to offer fullblown critique- theyâre just as valuable for telling you that âthey donât understand what something isâ or âsomething feels offâ or if their response is opposite of what you hoped to achieve.

This episode convinced me, personally, that peridot loves lapis so much. Through the whole episode she pretty much spells it out; -â lapis hates it when i call it the gem cave so i donâtâ *grabs hair in despair when lapis ran off, - runs after her screaming* LAAAPIS!! - âhey, nobody said theres a rushâ - when lapis is sad because she is adjusting to earth slower than navy - overall looking at Lapis throughout the whole episode with so much love and concern in her eyes i canât
If u donât support Lapidot thats fine, but plz donât tell me about it cause i honestly donât care.
I just want to talk about this. I see So Many backhanded compliments to The New Crystal Gems saying like, âitâs nice to have some realistic Lapis and Peridot interaction without Lauren Zukeâs shitty writing cramming the ship down our throatâ or something like that, and, like, it was not bad writing?? It was not out of character or anything. As somebody trying to recover from depression, I found that one of the best things you can do for yourself is to surround yourself with positivity and go through the motions, and even if you donât feel anything, you donât feel bad, and you start to get better, and that is very clearly what Lapis is trying to do. Sheâs just riding the wave of Peridotâs genuine excitement of exploring every intellectual inch of life she never even knew existed before and, sort of hoping that if she plays along, some of that happiness may rub off on her. Sheâs watching her Earth show, making meep morps with her, helping her decorate the barn, even making music with her, and she smiles. There are moments where Lapis just smiles, and thatâs her trying. I love the toilet meep morp scene in particular, because during this scene, the same dark ominous music that always plays when Lapis uses her water abilities plays, but what sheâs using them for isnât something out of rage or desperation, sheâs funneling that same power she only ever associated with negative things into something silly and pointless that Peridot thinks is beautiful and makes her excited. This is Lapis healing. Peridot is the medium by which Lapis is healing herself, and that is beautiful writing.
