MCU Spider-Man is cinematically self-referential: to promote interest, it’s drawing from previous films, previous actors and characters, etc. to solidify its own universe. And it’s working to an extent - at least for me, because I’m stoked to see Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and possibly Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker again. But Spiderverse is not limited to the whims and/or secrecy of a tightly-kept cinematic universe like the MCU is; it draws from the depths of comic material, branches out into all kinds of artistic styles, and really has no limit as to what it can do because it’s not trying to shore up the narratives of other films. It’s the difference between a film that is a sequel at its core and a sequel which is its own film at its core: MCU Spider-Man is limited by his own universe, but Spiderverse is set free by his.
