I don’t think yall are very much aware of what’s going on right now. Climate took a shit on Portugal last night and on a summer day that reached up 45º C (that’s 113º Farenheit, I even took the liberty of converting that for you) it suddenly started to rain in some areas and thunderstorms bursting out in others. A natural phenomenon known as “global warming is fucking up our world but is also a gentle reminder that the coastal countries are gonna be the first to be wiped out of the planet”. We have so much problems with forest fires every year but it’s always due to criminal arson, fireworks gone wrong or queimadas, but this year it’s nothing anyone has ever seen. And it’s affected very secluded areas, where poor people live with their cattle. 61 people dead. this is the worst tragedy in like 50 years. half these people died burned alive inside their cars trying to escape. firefighters just found cars scattered across the highway and deep into the woods with burned bodies inside. victims go from 50 year olds to as yound as a 3 year old child who died attempting to escape her home with her grandmother. 150 people lost everything they owned and that means farms, cattle and things where their lives depended on. Like, images on TV just show these highways completely burned with cars burned to the ground and plastic covering the bodies, scattered everywhere, some of them rolled into the woods. It’s unreal. I’ts actually undescribable, the level of horror these people are witnessing. And all because mother nature took a dump on us. So yeah, at least next time you wonder if climate change is real or not remember this
started with a simple lightening bolt on a 113ºF hot day. also remember it’s no even summer yet.
if anyone is interested in helping, here’s the account number you can donate to: PT50 0035 0001 00100000 330 42
also a crowfunding website raising moneys for victims https://ppl.com.pt/pt/node/384179
guys it’s really really bad

First of all, THIS.
Second of all, the problem is even worse than “simple” climate change.
You see, Portugal has a big problem, and that problem is called the eucalyptus trees. They were brought over to the country because they grow fast and are in very high demand for the paper industries. There are even genetically modified eucalyptus trees to make this or that sort of paper in the country. Now, this all sounds fine and dandy, right? Poor country managing to get some trees that will boost the economy because everyone apparently loves our toilet paper and what not. BUT, it’s not so simple.
Because to plant eucalyptus trees, you need to have a place to put them, and the best place to put them is where other trees already were.
Suddenly, native forests started dwindling down and these massive eucalyptus plantations started popping up across the country, and the more the word got around that yes, these were magic money-maker trees, the worse it got. Everyone needs some cash at the end of the day, especially when there’s an economic crisis going.
But what they failed to remember was that these trees are not native to Portugal, and that non-native plants ALWAYS bring problems. The eucalyptus is full of them:
a) the bark is not as “anti-fire” as ye old oak’s, and that’s not a coincidence. The eucalyptus seeds pop open when there’s a lot of heat, and I mean, A LOT. Like a fire. So ofc that when a fire rages, the trees go all fire-happy and burn all over the place. It’s the best way for the seedlings to come to life.
b) their roots are long and they suck every bit of water they can. Portugal is undergoing a severe drought. When the eucalyptus sucks all available water, no other plants thrive, they just shrivel up and die. Nothing but more fuel for the fires.
And because the eucalyptus sucks away every bit of water, no oaks or other native trees manage to thrive. Trees that could withhold the fire for long enough for the firefighters to arrive and put it down before the fire spread all over.
You’d think that people would realise it, but they don’t. This summer, thousands of acres of forest will burn up to crisps. Hundreds of people will lose their home. Thousands of animals will die - either burnt or through habitat loss. Dozens of firefighters and other civilians will die. This summer, we will ask the EU for aid. If it’s like last year, they’ll begrudgingly send us a couple of planes. But hopefully not. Hopefully these 62 deaths reminded them there are more countries in the EU that need help. We shall see. Regardless, this summer the whole country will breathe ash and smoke.
And do you know what will happen once winter starts creeping in? The paper industries will go to the farmers who lost their trees and ask for the land for a few pennies. The farmers will take those pennies, for how can a dead piece of land be worth anything more? The paper industries will plant more eucalyptus trees - unless, of course, the building industries get there first and build up in a place that used to be a natural park. People will stop talking about it. And everything will happen again the following year.
It’ll be worse. It’ll be much worse. Because with climate change, it can never get any better.
So, please, if you know of anyone who owns land in Portugal, persuade them not to plant eucalyptus trees. Yes, it’s of the greatest importance to help those in need right now, but it’s also vital to stop this epidemic before even more lives are lost.
And if you happen to know anyone who works in the EU commission, persuade them to help us fight the fires. We’ll need help the whole of the summer, not just now.
holy shit i wanna fucking hug you, you explained it so perfectly the one problem I’ve had with eucalyptus trees my whole fucking life but could never put to words, everyone fucking read this now
oh hey here’s some depressing news from january regarding that lol
Portugal forest fire leaves at least 62 dead, country in national mourning
A catastrophic forest fire currently raging in central Portugal has killed at least 62 people, the BBC reported.
The fire in Portugal’s Pedrógão Grande area has also injured dozens so far, including several firefighters, and numbers of casualties and injuries are expected to rise.
Those killed in the fire were primarily in vehicles trying to escape the area, along with 11 who died in a nearby village.
Prime Minister Antonio Costa said it was “the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires,” according to the BBC. Read more. (6/18/17, 10:31 AM)
There’s been a fire in a town in Leiria district, Portugal. 19 passed away. 😔 Stay strong and hopefully the fire gets controlled soon.
Abraço tugas.
Picture from radio comercial’s instagram.
24 dead as of now
58 dead now.
54 wounded.
150 people lost their homes.
1500 firefighters actively fighting it.
There’s spanish and italian helicopters helping right now, and more seem to be coming soon.
Police believes the fire was originated in a dry thunderstorm when lightning hit a tree. From then on it was quickly out of control due to adverse conditions such as strong winds and extreme heat.
There were also several problems with allocating firemen to Pedrógão due to around 10 active fires in the whole country. Several were allocated there, but not after a few hours.
Firefighters advise people, for the love of god, to not go out to watch the flames because you make everyone’s lives more complicated and you place yourself as a potential victim.
I have no words for this.
Bless our firefighters and #PrayForPortugal
Death toll is up to 62.
Also, a correction: spanish and french helicopters/rescue airplanes.
There is going to be a 3 day mourning period nation-wide.

Outros apelos começam a surgir.
