So, the word Hobgoblin. Guess where it comes from? It’s a name. Robin Goodfellow was also known as Robert Goblin, shortened to Hob Goblin (then a diminutive of “Robert”), which later sources made into one word. Hob also meant “elf”, although which one came first is a bit unclear.  As such, it’s entirely valid to interpret “goblin” as not a species but a family. They’re still elves, with all the ethereal beauty and mystic powers. They’re just the weird addams family elves who run through the ancient forest shrieking and eating bugs. They have one tree and they have burnt it down 13 times now. All their animal companions are weird dogs they found in various holes. “A goblin invasion” isn’t an army of tiny monsters but a warning that it’s elf Christmas and the Extended Goblin Family will be getting together for the holidays, everyone batter your doors and hide until new years at the earliest.
