*First, I want to start off by saying sorry for already being inconsistent. I’m still building this page, and I’m having trouble thinking of what to post. It’s my summer break from school, so I’ll try to create more content.*
So last Friday, May 25th, I went to a concert alone for the first time. I went to listen to Lawrence and Michael Blume, and I got to listen to Suzy Jones for the first time.
The concert was at The Independent in San Francisco, which is about 45 minutes from where I live, so I spent a good amount of my day with no one to talk to. I’m a homebody, suburban chick, so being in a big city alone was a bit nerve-racking.
I got to the venue a little bit more than an hour early, and I didn’t want to stand in the line of only two people, so I decided to walk the block to pass time. Even though it’s a big city, and most people are just minding their own business, I couldn’t help but feel like people were watching me loop the block so many times. I get terribly anxious anytime I’m out in public by myself, whether it be grocery shopping or simply walking to class, and adding to that, being in an unfamiliar place just seemed like I was bound to have a panic attack, but everything was a-ok.
Once I got into the venue, I picked a spot by the stage and stood there until the first performer came up. It was awkward for awhile because there wasn’t a lot of people, and I stood there blanking looking at the walls, but as the room filled up and the first performer came on stage, I became a little more comfortable. During the performances, my nerves were at ease, because it was the part of the whole event that I’m used to, which is listening to the performances, getting elbowed in the boob, and ending up behind tall people. At the end of the night, I was supposed to talk to one of the performers for my @ixieday page, but unfortunately, they left early because they had a flight to catch. Nonetheless, they were all amazing, extremely lively, and I would definitely pay to see them again.
So this whole experience wasn’t just me going to a concert, but an opportunity to step way out of my comfort zone. From the car drive to waiting in line, I was anxious, but as expected, I was worrying for nothing. So if you have the time, money, or even courage, to go to a concert by yourself, I would totally do it just for the experience.
