Nothing can suppress a human's curiosity

Tying the reigns of his horse by a tree trunk, Levi got down and moved to kneel beside his fallen subordinate.

He hesitated as something dawned on him, turning back to the man and giving him a weak laugh. “Wait, girlfriend? What girlfriend?” he asked, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand awkwardly. 

"Mikasa? You think Mikasa and I-- Ah, no, Captain," he said softly, glancing away and shaking his head. "She's my sister. Sort of. Adoptive sister, I guess," he said with a shrug. "But still, she's practically family to me. She's protective of me because..." he sighed, shrugging. "She thinks I can't handle stuff on my own. I mean, I know she's already lost a lot, but she's a little /too/ overprotective sometimes." 

When the corporal left to make the tea, he turned his eyes to wander around the room, landing on the stack of papers both finished and untouched on Levi’s desk. He stood up, curiosity getting the better of him, and dared to peek at a few of the papers, reading the paragraphs of information and skimming some of the longer ones, making sure not to touch anything lest anything be taken out of order.

"Ah, no sir," he said instantly, giving him a weak, apologetic smile. He hadn't really gotten a chance to look over anything with great detail anyway, but still felt bad about snooping. "Just that all that paperwork looks pretty boring," he laughed breathily, tilting his head slightly up at his captain. 

"Yes, sir, you’re right," he agreed automatically, but it was clear in his tone that he was more than a little disappointed by it. He hated being treated like a child— no, not even like a child. Like a wild animal, a time bomb that could potentially go off at any moment. He /wasn’t/ a bomb… right?

     ”Of course I’m right; I’m me.” He tried to make light of the situation, he really did. It was just very difficult, and he gave up trying not a moment after saying that phrase.

"Ah... sure," He said after a moment. Honestly sometimes he did just sleep in his uniform, but he figured Levi wouldn't let that happen. He also didn't really care if Levi saw him when he changed - they were both guys, it wasn't that big a deal - but didn't question it.
