Unique Type Grid Sketchbooks

This week, type designer, Dr Barry Spencer, launched an exciting and pretty unusual Kickstarter campaign.

As a ‘Speculative Type Designer’ Barry pushes the boundaries of what letters are supposed to look like. As part of his design process he generally creates and interacts with a grid to make the letterforms.

“More often than not I will base my designs on a simple square grid such as those found in sketchbooks or in design software. However, I will just as often need to adapt or evolve the square grid by drawing over the top of it in order to make an entirely new grid from which to create.” 

In a recent project #100daysofspontaneous he challenged himself to explore the possibilities of the square grid over 100 day project, producing a unique and dazzling grid each day.

The intricate and beautiful patterns drew a lot of attention and the end result will be the production of 100 unique booklets via a Kickstarter campaign. Each of the grids are being produced as A5 size (148x210mm) sketchbooks with 36 pages of each unique grid for you to play with and explore.
