ANAKT ACADEMY || 01
"Ugh..." You groan as a sharp pain rushes to your head. To your surprise, your surroundings didn't feel solid and hard but soft. Like you were on a bed. Almost as if it was your own bed. Was what happened really just a short, hyperealistic dream..?! Your eyes shoot open, a ray of sun greeting you through a giant window. At first glance, you could immediately tell you weren't on your hospital bed. Let alone, your room. Much to your dismay.
You knew your room like the back of your hand, after all. It's the only place you know off, where you grew up. You examine the foreign place from where you sit, a light blue curtain hangs on your left and to your far front, desks and cupboards which were filled to the brim with what seems to be prescriptions and utilities you would usually find in a nurses office.
Everything just seemed to be going too fast. One thing you were sleeping, the other you ended up in a place which seemed like a school. A school... You peer down at yourself, you weren't wearing your usual gown. Instead, your clothes were replaced with a white button up layered by a dark blue jacket. You glance underneath your blanket, making out dark blue pants that partnered with the top you wore. A uniform. One that wasn't very pleasing to look at. But who were you to judge a person's choice in design?
You only got to process the events that occurred to you just now. The chances you happened to end up here bombards your head all at once. You trace back your memories, in an attempt to gather all the possibilities of how you could end up where you are now. Not long from now, you were on the verge of passing out from fatigue, that's when you ended up in a hallway which belonged to a school. You were approached by a girl with brown hair but then you ended up passing out again. But this time, due to stress and overstimulation, how embarrassing.
The most logical reason you could come up with right now is that you've been transported to a completely different universe for no absolute reason, a reason you must find as quickly as possible. Just like some of the books you've spent time reading. As stupid and fictional it may sound, it is still considered a chance until you find out some other possible cause. Besides that, you needed to find a way back and fast. Who knows how many people would worry during your absence. Unless time worked differently from where you’re from? Again, as stupid as it may sound, it could be that the universe you're in now, a day sums up to 24 hours. While in your universe, a day could be equivalent to a second, or vice versa.
Your thoughts are disrupted when your head whips to the side at the noise of a door creaking open. What comes next is a pair of light footsteps that increasingly grows louder. Was someone coming? Instinctively, you grab the nearest object you could find, gripping it close to your chest. What entered your line of vision was a person who was unfathomably gorgeous, you were wonderstruck. You'd think you could only find these people in books, or fiction. He had pale, porcelain skin like a doll, with blonde waves and glasses. Beneath those glasses were stunning yellow eyes. He wore the exact same navy uniform you were wearing. He held a notepad in his hands, and the thing that captured your attention the most were the tips of his fingers. They were.. Purple.
You both locked eyes but you couldn't tell what he was thinking, despite the glow in his eyes, they just seemed so... Dull. His eyes trail down to my hands, brows creasing. "Are you planning to hit me with that?" He asks meloncholic, pointing at the solid in my hand. You follow his eyes to the bottle of hand sanitizer you held in your hand. A sheepish laugh pushes past your lips as you gently place the item you grabbed where you first found it.
It was one hell of a suffocating atmosphere. What made it worse was how empty and unchanging his gaze was. Terrifying... He clears his throat holding up the notepad, as he flips through the papers, and then he comes to a halt. He flips it around flashing you a bunch of names of students enrolled in the school. He brings the notepad back down to his side, giving you his full attention.
"I recognise and know every student who comes to this school, it's my role and responsibility to do so. So answer me. Who are you?"
The question was so sudden and straight-forward, it made it difficult to come up with a decent excuse in place. You'd already decided you couldn't let anyone figure out that you weren't supposed to be here, so what should you say.?
"I'm... I'm a transfer student-- I.. Enrolled late because uhm, well my family moved suddenly and the office said my records may not show up yet! S-so I was told just to attend class for the time being..." You pulled this excuse right out of your butt… Not exactly. This WAS a situation that did occur sometime during your mum’s days of youth, lucky for you, your mum loved yapping about her high school experiences, as this may have also saved you from potentially being kicked out. Or worse, reported. As unconvincing as that may sound because of how socially incompetent you were, the blonde still seemed to believe you, writing something down on the notepad.
"Your name?"
"It's [name]..."
"I'm Luka, I'm from the student council. If you ever need help, come to our office and ask for me... Welcome to Anakt Academy, [name]."
He writes down one final thing before rushing out the nurses office without a goodbye. The switch in mood was random, but not unpleasant. Was this how all students acted in school..? Not long after the blonde left, the sliding door slams open right after it was closed, startling you. Through the open door reveals the same brunette you saw earlier today. "Hey!" She greets trotting towards you with a cheerful grin. "Just saw Luka come out from here so I figured you must've been up! How you feelin'?" She asks, sitting on the bed next to you.
Before you could utter a word, she perks, grabbing your hand, shaking it profusely. "Oh! I forgot, my bad! Names Hyuna, you are?" She exclaims ardently. "Oh-- uhm, [name]." She was incredibly nice upon first meeting, but you still couldn't help but feel anxious. Was this normal when talking to people your age? Still, you also felt an unfamiliar feeling rise from your chest. Is this what they call making friends? It made you feel excited.
A comfortable silence filled the room for a minute, the only noise present being Hyuna humming a melodic tune and your fingers tapping against the blanket. Your gaze rises from your hands, and you see Hyuna staring at you rather intently. Nervous at the sudden eye contact, you tilt your head in question.
"Soooo, since you're new and all, do you want a tour around the school?" She suggests after a few moments of silence with a bright grin, and how could you ever say no? No words escape your mouth this time except for a nod. "Great! Come with me then." She grabs your wrist and you feel light. Is this excitement? Happiness.? You weren't sure but it felt nice. That feeling didn't last long though as she began to hoist you to your feet.
"Oh- wait I can't--" You were lifted to your feet, you closed your eyes tight. Bracing yourself for a horrible fall. You were so sure that you were gonna drop, expecting a throbbing ache from the impact, but instead… "Hey... Are you good?" Slowly you open one eye peeking at your legs. They didn't tremble, or give up on you. They didn't feel weak or heavy. It felt normal? But you weren't sure because you didn't know what normal was. But even so, it was a miracle. Was your condition temporarily gone? But you couldn't be too sure so you decided to still be extremely careful to not push your body to its limits.
"You look troubled… You okay?" Hyuna looks at you with worry, feeling a gentle hand on your shoulder. You didn't even realise until she had pointed it out, your face scrunched with both confusion and sadness. You could just imagine your pitiful expression. In doing so, you relax, shaking your head. "I'm okay, don't worry." You respond with a reassuring smile. She returns the smile tilting her head.
"If you say so... So, what do you want to check out first? The courtyard?"
"Of course!”

Just like the iconic illustration by Vincent Van Gogh, the sky was painted in a niche, inky black. A void that stretched into infinity. Flickers of white enhanced the canvas washed in darkness, like splotches of paint. Splayed, but brilliant. Just like a 'Starry Night Sky.' It was chilly, the frosty air seeping through the cracks of the open window, only a few centimetres wide. A sigh is drawn from your lips, a heavy one. But it was unknown whether it was from the lingering thoughts in your head, or because of the lack of warmth the fuzzy blanket on your lap failed to provide to your weak, scrawny body.
Another sigh follows.
But this time, trapping the warmth of your breath beneath the palms of your hand, using it as a source of heat. Yes, the crisp air was the cause of goosebumps scattered along your skin, but it's times like this that this type of atmosphere was simply just needed.
You glance out the window, fingertips pressing against the glass pane that gradually went numb due to the cold. A few rooms below your own, was a busy street. People crowded them, dressed in warm attire, chunky coats, and thick, woolly scarves that covered half their faces. Although winters where you lived weren't flooded with pure snow, the tempratues still managed to crawl near negatives.
Fluorescent lights fought the darkness, shops, and stores glowed in rows all the way to the ends of bustling roads. By this time on a Friday night, townsfolk were most active. People hung out in big groups, whether they were families, friends, or couples who wanted to spend a day or a few hours in each other's presence.
You'd pray endlessly you could experience that type of exhilaration. But of course, those prayers remained unanswered and ignored.
You didn't specifically want to be anyone that loomed the streets, just someone who was able to walk down them with someone to call dear. Cheering, laughing. Having fun. But even you knew that, that would never happen. you weren't stupid. Even though your illness was always something sugarcoated and made to not make a big deal out off, you never missed a word said behind closed doors.

"Thanks ma.." She hands me a bowl of apples, carefully cut into bite-sized cubes. I accept it whole-heartedly, popping a slice into my mouth, with a satisfied hum. All of a sudden, the door growled as it slid open, revealing a tall man who seemed around his mid-thirties. He wore a lengthy, white coat which layered over a light-blue flannel and checkered tie. He wasn't the doctor I was used to seeing.
He cleared his throat and mom turned her head. "Miss.. [Last Name]... May I talk to you for a second?" He started and mom agreed, standing up from the stool she was sitting from. "I'll be back okay baby? Finish your fruit before I finish talking with the doctor." She comments. I nod and she holds my cheeks, pecking my forehead before exiting the room with the doctor.
The empty bowl sits on the side-table next to my bed. I tap my fingers against the sheets absent-mindedly, observing people stroll the sidewalks got boring eventually. Waiting seemed like forever, and it seemed like their 'chat' would drag on for awhile longer. Curiosity got the better of me, so I dangle my legs off the bed, carefully sliding down.
When my feet met the ground, it was freezing. Immediately my knees buckled, and I grab onto the heart monitor for support. It was enough to stabalise me. gripping the stand with two hands, I rolled it across the floor with me as I tramp my way towards the door. The glass on the sliding door was tinted. However, you could still make out a persons figure if you looked close enough.
Standing the heart monitor right next to me, I push my hands against the door, pressing my ear against the thin crack.
"--Unfortunately, because their immune system has been poor since birth, the severity of their illness worsened. I'm very sorry to inform you ma'am but... It's unlikely they'll make it past adulthood."
-
It happened many years back, but... It was a conversation imprinted to your brain. Of course it was, it was one that revloved around you, life, and death. The very things that construct the exsistance of a human being. You remember the pitiful look your mom had when she entered your room soon after. She was smiling, but that smile held no ounce of real joy, but endless suffering and saddness. A smile that covers up your initial death.
but here you are.
You weren't afraid of death. At least, not anymore. Everyday, you faced with death, and it's permanant. So now you just had to accept it, and so you did. It was funny because, you could just drop dead any second now. That was the most likely outcome. Unless... You'd live. Defying what would be considered the ideals. It all comes down to faith, if so, it wouldn't be impossible. But you didn't believe in miracles.
If miracles were a thing, then why do people still suffer? Death was inevitable, you were aware of that very much so. But still you question why a long list of how a person may die exisisted. Natural causes, accidents, or it being intentional. It was dumb but not something a person could prevent.
A yawn escapes your lips, and only then does the realisation kick in on now how late it was. You were too lost in your train of thoughts. You pull the window shut, flick the switch of the lamp off, then sink backward into your mattress with a content sigh. You snuggle underneath the blanket, shifting on your side, gazing at the door.
Maybe one day you could leave this building your too familiar with, to step out into the open and bathe in the warm sun that draws on your skin. That'd be nice.
You close your eyes, letting those thoughts linger a little while longer. Etching a good image in your brain to help quicken your slumber. Soon, your conciousness begin to drift, all visions, fantasies dissolving into a watercolour blur. The faint buzzing in your ear fades into nothingness and you are greeted with a peace of mind.
"..."
The silence was loud, or rather, noise started to raise in volume. You could hear people speaking from outside your room, it was muffled but it sounded like there was multiple. You ignore it, rolling to your right in hopes to drown out the noise.
"A__ _ou _k_y?"
Even as you do, for some reason the noise grows more audible, louder. As if the persons speaking were coming closer and closer. You started to worry. Was someone in your room? It was prohibited for a doctor, nurse or anyone to enter your room unless a emergency were to arise... But you didn't hear your door open, and you felt fine. Still, you kept your eyes closed shut until a sudden bright light surpassed through your eyelids.
You shifted again, and you noticed your bed felt cold. It was uncomfortable, hard even. You spread your hands across your bed and it felt... Solid? Too suddenly for your liking, you feel a warm hand press against your forehead and your eyes snap open.
Immediately, you were welcomed with a radiance so bright you wince. You groan turning your head to the side, feeling a upcoming headache from the sudden light on your face. Only then did you realise something wasn't right. Maybe you realised it a little too late but...
"Hey, hey! Are you okay?" A female voice spoke. You stare at the girl with long, brown hair tied in a ponytail draped over her shoulder. Her big brown eyes boring into your own with immense curiousity, but mostly worry. Were you dreaming? If so, everything felt totally real. You felt nervous. You swallowed a lump in your throat, you can't remember the last you interacted with anyone your age. This should be the least of your worries yet here you are. Stumbling over your words as if this was your first human interaction for the time you've been living. Though, it wasn't exactly false either.
Your eyes dart left and right looking anywhere but the brunette in front of you. You notice a crowd was forming around the girl, or rather... You. Murmurs and whispers passed around quickly as holding a hot potato. You couldn't help but feel a rush of anxiousness.
"Oi! Why don't yous scram, ya'll clearly making them nervous with all the racket and noise..." The brunette scolded with a booming voice. Immediately, the crowed dispersed leaving you and the girl alone in a unfamiliar, corridoor. She leaned over, hands on her knees gleaming at you with a smile.
"You alright? People told me there was a student that collapsed in the hallway.. Huh... I don't think I've seen you around before..." You paused. Of course she didn't know you, you didn't even go to this school! Nonetheless, any school... You look around in a daze, big rooms which you assume were classrooms, and humongous windows where the sun glared right at you.
Definately NOT a hospital.
"Hey... Can you pinch me..?"
The girl looked at you with confusion but still complied to your request, pinching your arm. The stinging sensation that stayed on your arm was all the confirmation you needed to know you were in fact, not dreaming. Not long before that, a hazy feeling overtook your mind. Feeling light, you felt your body slam against floor. Your head took an even harder impact to the ground.
The last thing you heard while you were semi-concious was the girl freaking out over the sight of a person (You) fainting on spot again.
Just where WERE you?
