Not many people know this about me but when I was in college the first two years I was in a very bad place personally. In my sophomore year I called my mother and said come get me or I won’t make the night. I went home that evening and the next day went right into counseling. I went through several different trials of meds and therapists all through the holidays. Once the holidays were over my parents decided that I needed to get a job. My mom said there was a position open where she worked and that I should talk to her boss Ruth. So I did and within a day or so I was hired. Little did I know that working for Ruth would save my life. Ruth was inspiring. She was by far my favorite boss. She taught me to lighten up, to laugh and most of all to go out into the world and not be afraid to be my true self. She taught me the joy of living and loving what you do. Ruth loved Peter Pan. She would dress up like him randomly and run through our school throwing pixie dust on the kids. She was a ball of positive energy and a force to be reckoned with. Today my heart is heavy because for a while now Ruth has been suffering with cancer. This morning she passed. She touched so many people when she was alive. I only hope she knew how much she meant to us all. Off to Neverland, Peter... see you in the stars.

A match always reminds me of my father. He was a pipe smoker and always had a pack of matches on him at all times. I think he liked the smell of lit matches rather than a lighter. He loved matches especially the wooden ones. He often would brag about “strike anywhere” matches and how fun they were to literally light off of anything. He got a kick out of striking a match off of a brick wall or off the ground. It was like he had a magic trick or super power no one knew about. In some states they are illegal so I think he felt like a rebel lighting those matches off of everything in sight. I have so many sense memories linked to him. The smell of a lit match is just one of them. He will always be my lucky strike. 🔥
