A new beginning
I stretch languidly for a moment. The sunâs rays are gently shining outside, morning dawning finally. I blink, suddenly realising. âBhraata Bheem! Wake up!â My shout arouses more people than I had intended, who grouse irritatedly. âItâs dawn!â I exclaim, running out. âGurudev had asked us to assemble right after dawn! Come on!âÂ
I am the first to reach the aangan, but that is expected. Most of my cousins do not take kindly to waking so early.
âPranaam, Gurudev,â I say, as others also troop in. Gurudev nods. Once all 105 of us are assembled, he runs his gaze on us. We stand in a near-silent glade, the susurrus of the wind the only sound, light barely filtering in through the thick canopy of leaves above.Â
When Gurudev speaks, his voice is slow, measured but intense. âBefore we start your formal education, I have a task dear to my heart I require you to complete on your manhood.âÂ
There is silence. Complete, utter silence. Why is everyone silent? I donât understand why no one answers, because there is only one answer that can be given.Â
I step forward. âI solemnly give you my word, Gurudev, that on the onset of my manhood, I shall accomplish whatever task you would have of me.â Until now, I had kept my head bowed, but as I speak, I raise my head, looking into his eyes. âI promise.âÂ
To my utter shock, he hugs me close, there are tears in his eyes. âGurudev?â âYou are the warrior I was searching for. You will do it. Ah, how you gladden my heart!â I hug him back. It feels nice. Almost like I am hugging Pitamah or even Pitashree. I feel safe, protected.

The first day of gurukul⌠A little while ago I honestly believed that by this time we would be studying under the learned sages, at home in the forest greens, with Pitashree also honing our weapon wielding skills on the sides, shaping us into fine warriors. In the evenings I would help Maatashree in preparations for dinner. Arjun would tell her about all the things he learned that day. Nakul and Sahdev would suprise Maata Madri with their quick retention abilities and in reward for our hardworks she would treat us with her special handmade sweets. I believed that this perfect routine would go on forever.
Our guru-puja finished, I followed Bhratashree while also keeping the twins near me and keeping one eye on Arjun. I had to make sure that my little brothers do not get picked on by those brats of Hastinapur. I knew those cretins were waiting for a chance, a slip, and as much as I would love to throw their leader in the nearest river, getting into trouble on the first day itself could be a mortifying incident for Maatashree and all of us. And that is one thing I will never do. I have to exercise restraint, and be the bigger person today, as Bhratashree had advised.
âArenât you excited for the beginning of our lessons, Bhrata Bheem?â asked Arjun, ever the enthusiastic ball of energy. I could tell that he was deeply influenced by our gurudev even in the first meeting. âI am but I could never even come close to you in terms of excitement, my lively anuj.â I answered while smiling encouragingly. Gurudev was also touched by his solemn promise, inside I was proud that he liked only our Arjun this much. âWhat do you think of our gurudev? Doesnât he look very mighty and admirable?â Nakul joined in, âI think I certainly prefer him over guru Kripa. He has the bearings of a warrior, so I trust him.â I stated.
Bhratashree voiced his disapproval from the front, something about respecting all of our elders. I apologized and we reached the place where we will practice our combat techniques. My eyes are caught by the mace kept under the tree, I know this feeling, this familiarity that I feel. I am aching to start our practice right away, I know I can excel in it, but before that, first we have to listen to gurudevâs lessons as he acquaints us with the weapons and the dharma of a kshatriya. For the first time since coming to Hastinapur, I feel ready and truly exhilarated.
I grin at Bhraata Bheem. âHave fun!â âEh, not really, we need to listen first.â âAttention.â I snap to attention, eyes facing the front, directly at Gurudev. Bhraata Bheem snorts. âAh, you never change. Were the same with Guru Kripa, still the same.â âShh, Bhraata Bheem! Heâs teaching!â Bhraata Bheem rolls his eyes, but subsides. âGo on,â Gurudev says at the end. âShow me how you spar. Which weapon do you prefer?â There is a clamour of voices. âArjun.â âGurudev?â âPick your preferred weapon.â âAagya, Gurudev.âÂ
I pick the bow. âExcellent. Shoot.â I nod, stringing the bow, shooting straight. âGood.â I smile. He reminds me quite a bit of Pitashree. âDhanyavadam, Gurudev.â âContinue practice. You have great potential.â He turns to the others. âI will!âÂ
After hours of practice, we finally end the session. Iâm pleasurably tired as I do the rituals of Sandhyavandana. Immediately after, Gurudev calls us for a lesson in Shaastrs.Â
Bhraata Bheem groans, a groan echoed by the twins, too. âOh, come on, donât be lazy!â âI appreciate your enthusiasm, Arjun.â âIs that not duty, Jyeshth?â Jyeshth gives a wan smile. âIt is.âÂ
I run in again. Gurudev smiles at me. âSettle down, Arjun.â I sit down immediately. âOne of the most important rules of being a student is obedience. The other is not just as a student, but as a person. Humility is always important.âÂ
Humility is not easy, I think. I can feel pride in my talent, in the way Gurudev likes me. But if Gurudev says it is, then it has to be, doesnât it?Â
I tried to stifle it, but a yawn still slips through my mouth, inviting a disapproving glance from Sahdev. Jyesth Bhratashree and Bhraata Arjun are much too immersed in the lessons to notice my tiredness, only Bhraatashree Bheem can understand my plight "Just a little more" he assures me, I nod slightly "After such a long first practice, I can't be blamed if I feel tired and want to rest" I pouted.
"You will get to rest if you just sit with patience for a few moments." Finally comes a remark from Sahdev. He was just as worn out as me from training under the sun, but now he doesn't even looks concerned about something as trivial as sleep, just listening intently. How can he recover so fast is beyond me.
"Yes, Gurudev", my eyes snap open, that was Bhraata Arjun, maybe Guru Drona had called on him to answer his question, and he had given a perfect answer. As expected of my big brother, always the model student, Gurudev clearly looks pleased, maybe he will let us off earlier. I'll plead to Bhratashree next time to teach me the lessons I missed, he doesn't turn anyone down.
After an eternity passes, today's lesson are finally done. I hurry after Bhraata Bheem, desperate to go to bed already, "I'm famished. I think today I can eat even all the servings meant for you three" he jokes while looking at me, Sahdev and Bhraata Arjun, who is clearly still lost in thoughts about practice and everything, because he gives his assent to Bhraata Bheem.
Sahdev is outraged and I am too but so sleepy that I just mutter "you are welcome to help yourself, big brother". That catches his attention and he orders firmly "no one of you is allowed to miss dinner or I will personally drag him to the place". There goes my argument, there's no choice now but to follow him. He is like Maata in that regard, always caring and looking out for us.
