"The Tale of Genji" is a celebrated work of #Japanese #literature, attributed to #Murasaki #Shikibu, a noblewoman, poet, and lady-in-waiting, written during the peak of the #Heian period in the early 11th century.
It is often considered the world's first novel and the first by a woman to gain international recognition.
The story depicts the lives of high-ranking courtiers in the Heian period. Although the original manuscript is lost, more than 300 subsequent copies exist, with varying degrees of reliability.
Comprising 54 chapters, the narrative provides a detailed view of the life of #Hikaru #Genji and the generations that succeed him.

"Hikaru" means "shining," referring to his appearance, thus earning him the title "Shining Prince."
He is portrayed as exceptionally handsome and intelligent. Genji is the Japanese emperor's second son, but due to political reasons, he is relegated to civilian life and serves as an imperial officer.
"It was only natural that all these ladies would eagerly compete for Genji's favor, and there were many he admired in different ways. However, most acted too maturely; only one, the new princess, was both pretty and young, and although she tried to avoid him, their encounters were inevitable."
