And with that chapter nine ended, making you close the embossed hardback book and look up at your daughter and husband who were huddled together under the white sheets of your bed. “Ok time to bed Nami!”

Immediately your daughter sat up from her dad’s lap, her adorable face scrunched up in a defiant pout. “Mama, you can’t just end it there! I need to know what happens!”

“I’m sorry baby girl, but it’s way past your bedtime,” you reasoned, leaving the book on the bed as you started to tidy up the glasses empty of their warm milk. “We can read more tomorrow night.”

Nami scrambled to the edge of the bed, pleading to you with the wide puppy eyes she inherited from her father. “Please mama, just one more,” she begged, holding up one finger on her small hand and clinging to it.

You looked past her at Chanyeol, silently asking for him to help you out. He shrugged his shoulders - not exactly the response you had been expecting. “It is a Friday night babe,” he started, making Nami’s eyes light up. “One more chapter?”

This was why Nami was Daddy’s little girl.

Sighing in defeat, you placed the glasses back on your bedside table and climbed back into the admittedly warm and inviting bed. “Ok one more chapter,” you relented, earning cheers from your little family. “But you have to go straight to bed afterwards.”

“I promise,” Nami chimed.

“Me too.” Chanyeol added.

You shot him a serious look, which quickly softened when you saw his beautiful smile. “Next book, it’s your turn to read,” you told him quietly, feeling his chest shake from his chuckling as you cuddled up into his side, right next to Nami.

Opening your eyes as instructed, you looked down at the little silver box you husband had pressed into your open hands and sighed heavily. “Jongdae,” you whined, crawling up the bed to curl yourself up in his lap. “We said we weren’t doing presents this year.”

He laughed softly and planted a gentle kiss on your temple. “I know we’re saving for a house but I couldn’t resist,” he murmured against your skin, wrapping his strong arms around your waist and pulling you even closer,

“You are unbelievable,” you whispered, your hand reaching up to cradle his slightly stubbled cheek for a gentle caress.

“And you’re amazing,” he replied before his lips pressed a small kiss on your smiling mouth.

Returning to the gift box in your lap, you slowly unravelled the silky ribbon, moving it to one side as you lifted the lid. Inside, nestled in delicate tissue paper, was a single gold key - a house key to be specific.

You jumped up in Jongdae’s lap, squealing excitedly at what the key represented. “No way!” you cried, flickering your gaze between the key and your husband’s growing smile. “Are you serious!”

“Cross my heart and hope to die,” he answered, tightening his grip on your waist to pull you back on the bed, tangling you both up into a knot of limbs. His face was a mere few centimetres from yous, his hot breath tickling your skin. “We move in at the end of the month.”

You wanted to scream again but held back, sinking your teeth into your bottom lip to stop yourself. “This is the best birthday ever,” you barely breathed, falling into his deep dark twinkling eyes.

It all started with a phone call.

“I’ve hit the jackpot!” your best friend exclaimed loudly down the phone.

You laughed brightly, moving the microphone on your earphones closer to your mouth as you headed up the street towards your office. “Good morning to you too Mel.”

Mel had been your best friend since college. The two of you started a week after the beginning of term and immediately bonded as the only two people who didn’t know anyone else in the school. After that, the two of you were inseparable, following each other to university and graduating with honours together. You’d made many more friends over the years but Mel had always stayed by your side. She knew how to handle your sometimes crippling anxiety and you could easily manage her perpetual overexcitement. It was a perfect friendship.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, good morning!” she dismissed quickly, no doubt bouncing about in a circle like a hyperactive puppy. “You will never guess what has just happened!”
