What is Equivalent Exchange?

Equivalent Exchange is a low-pressure Fullmetal Alchemist fanwork exchange that welcomes fanfiction, fanart, and characters and ships from all existing versions of FMA canon! All relationships and types of relationships, including works focused on platonic relationships and single characters, are allowed.

What do I have to do in order to participate?

Are you able to complete at least one 500+-word fanfiction OR a piece of fanart between August 19 and September 26? Do you want to receive at least one 500+-word fanfiction OR a piece of fanart of a character or ship you specifically requested? Congratulations, you meet the requirements! 

You must also have an Archive of Our Own account, read the exchange rules, and be age 18 or older.

What are the rules?

The full rules are available here, but the two most important ones are:

Don’t be an asshole – no exceptions; and

Use applicable AO3 warnings if your work contains potentially disturbing content.

Is this exchange for romantic/sexual relationships only?

Absolutely not! 

All romantic and sexual relationships are welcome, but you may also request or create works focused exclusively on single characters or platonic relationships and you are encouraged to do so if that’s what interests you. This exchange is for everyone.

You said all romantic and sexual relationships are welcome, but does that include –

Yes.

FAQ questions asking “Is [ship] allowed in this exchange?” will be deleted. The answer is “Yes” across the board. (Yes, even that one.)

Okay, I read the rules and I have an AO3 account and I’m over 18, this sounds awesome and I want to participate so what do I do now?

Nominations – essentially, the free-for-all process of deciding which relationships and characters will be eligible for the exchange – will begin on July 28, 2019. Starting that day, you will be able to add ships and characters to the EE 2019 tagset on AO3 using the format described in the rules. (See last year’s EE 2018 tagset for examples of what people nominated then!) 

Later on you will get the chance to write down your requests and what you like and dislike in fanfic/fanart. Then on August 19 you will be matched with somebody else’s request to create a gift for them in secret and a different person will be matched with your request, like a secret Santa. After creating your assigned gift you will be allowed to create additional gifts or “treats” for whoever you want, even if they were matched with someone else!

Your gift(s) will be delivered to you, or “revealed”, on FMA Day, October 3.
