Hello! My name is Brooke Wells, and I’m an autistic 15 year old actor. The other day, I was very graciously accepted into the La Jolla Playhouse Young Players Conservatory! Unfortunately, even with a generous scholarship I am unable to make up the rest of the funds on my own.
I have been acting since I was 3 years old. Throughout my battles with depression and chronic illness, theater has always been there for me. It’s my comfort place; I always feel at home when I’m on the stage. I have been struggling with depression for the past 5 years, and the one place that always is able to bring me back is the theater. Even in mental hospitals, the one thing that kept me going was the knowledge that I would be able to go back to my home on the stage once I was able to leave.
A couple of my favorite roles are: Snoopy in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown!; Cheshire Cat in Alice @ Wonderland; Lucy in Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe!
I wish to go to Broadway, and do theater as a full-time profession. It’s my passion, and this program will help me grow more and more as an actor. Theater has also helped me with social cues and eye contact, and I really wish to grow more as an actor.
I was able to get into this program last year as well, however around the time I got in, my mother and I were struggling with financials and were barely able to eat, and I was unfortunately unable to go. The rest of the summer, I spent going in and out of hospitals due to my new diagnosis of gastroparesis. I spent more time in hospitals than out of them.
My dad, unfortunately, refuses to believe that this will help me in anyway and refuses to pay. I, however, know that this will help with mood and my experience as an actor. This program also would allow me to have ease to get into whatever college I want.
I need the funds in a week. I know this is incredibly fast, but in order for me to go I need to raise $1,500.
