When the pain receded, leaving only phantom memories and a heavy, relentless heartbeat, Vox's figure loomed over her. In his eyes, she saw neither regret nor horror, only the cold satisfaction of a successful experiment.

"From now on," he said in a voice that became her law and her sentence, "you are Sonar."

He gave her a new name, taking away everything she had ever been. And in gratitude for this gift of pain, she gave him her blind faith forever.
