Ok so hi sorry to bother you but may I ask what is your opinion on Flasheart and hotspur and what their relationship with their parents and each other are in my opinion I think that the parents treat two brothers differently and I know it’s not talked about enough, but someone should talk about Flasheart and hotspur’s parents again sorry to bother you
nothing to be sorry about, it’s not a bother! i’ve been reclusive when it comes to my general universe headcanons as of lately, not for any particular reason, i guess my problem was not finding my voice for awhile. because in reality i absolutely love daydreaming about the side characters and miss finding excuses to blab about them.
but the aspect of the lupins is one i heavily think about. i truthfully believe it was probably a scenario like what you mentioned, mixed with growing up as wolves in general. because, respectfully, i don’t doubt the modern lupins have good intentions societally, but to me i feel like they carry a lot of baggage. it’s easy and obvious to assume their weird imbalanced treatment of eachother, and general cruelness at times from many of the immediate pack/family, is due to the faulty, so-so writing, but i kinda like to roll with the assumption it goes a little deeper, as many others do.
it’s obvious all werewolves likely grow up in a bizarre environment. to keep it brief, in one part i believe it’s a deep-rooted cultural element that wolves see competition in everyone. it’s obviously mellowed out a bit in modern times, but for one, werewolves naturally have more rapid hormones (this /is/ me following my traditional lycanthrope ideas, it’s not stated in the show. bear with me haha), so i feel like striving to be the best, protecting themselves from their own impulses, while also maintaining a secret, disguised alignment with humans, inherently creates a very strange energy there.
but i also believe the lupins being the most prominent bloodline, that carries the most weight. it’s funny because as progressive and thoughtful that flashheart is now, i have the headcanoned impression (partially started from @/pinknpoodley) that he grew up being a bit more airheaded than he is now. however i do generally think hotspur too has always been equally as frustrating, but less so than now. he especially takes me for the younger sibling that gets easily walked over, while flashheart was just, competitive, overly excitable, and prideful to hotspurs measly disadvantage. it was definitely something like a "they’ll grow out of it" situation. which, yeah. neither of them had a cruel heart in the beginning, they were kids. but i feel like the divide really started while attending howlington, during the comprehension of their roles of the pack in adolescence.
as far as their parents go, i don’t have much of a visual on them, they’re more figments (whom i wish the series explored more). whenever i feel i get a good inspiration for what their personality was like, i’ll probably update. but, as i said with the cultural mentality of being the best, they probably did have more eyes on flashheart. but he also would grow better charisma growing into adulthood, while hotspur kinda grew a disregard for his parents in a way (who may or may not be dead by that point???). like, i can imagine he holds some compassion and admiration for them, or whoever might’ve been slightly more attentive(/kinder??? again, i’m mildly nervous making bold statements that one or the other might’ve been emotionally neglectful/abusive, because even i’m not sure how i vibe with it. but, take the implications of that with a grain of salt. again, i’ll think harder about it and update later), but he just gets so bitter it corrupts his view going forward. his actions for the future/present are not justified by his loser-status (for a lack of better words), but, i definitely agree he just, was never on people’s minds. he pushed people away, and rather fluffing up his own kids now, he’s even less focused on them.
i doubt their relationship ever really healed, which is obvious. hotspur was complacent for awhile til he finally aimed for his power trip he’s on now. don’t get me wrong at all, it is sooo easy to get legitimately heated over the writing decision of having them overlook /everything hotspur has done/, i just think it’s in part with not only some kind of oath modern wolves have for protecting themselves from humans now by offering therapeutic methods to those gone rogue, but with flashheart’s concern, he likely for awhile was still attached to hotspur. i have like, this really sad thought that being alone for so many years he overthought about so many things about their family dynamics. it beat him down for a long time, but it still overpowered him even after serving justice. it only made him easier to kinda manipulate, because i’m also carrying the notion (headcanon) by @/pinknpoodley again that hotspur, after gaining his separate upperhand, gained financial control of the pack apart from governmental control, which in my opinion, is extremely more terrifying than the series implies half the time. it was a slow revaluation for flash. and it legitimately feels shitty to think about how he probably really did want things to change.
like!! again! i know it sounds depressing, but their whole deal (and whatever the hightails, beowulfs, and other’s problems are) kinda makes me believe there really is something fundamentally wrong here. i genuinely believe they both deserve more depth put into them, and weirdly would be the first to admit i actually kinda like hotspur as a character. again, bad writing is still bad writing, but i feel like it’s so vague enough that virtually everyone kinda has gained the same idea about both of them. it’s MY favorite bad writing and i AM going to overthink it, lmao. maybe this answered your question, i’m sorry if it didn’t. i assumed this was a discussion that needed to happen eventually too, which is super fun.
