Hi! I’ve read all your posts about Sparky, including your Reddit post about Nguyen a few years ago, and I’m really intrigued. I was curious, what inspired the design of the dog sketch? You know, the yellow ear, the glowing eye, and the blue overalls, it’s such a unique look! Also, I was wondering about Sparky’s gameplay. From what I’ve seen in your posts, he only activates after looking at the workshop and moves like Bonnie or Chica, but is there anything else about how he was meant to work?
i've said before that there wasn't that much thought put into sparky's initial design, but i guess there are inspirations/influences that went into him. the overalls definitely came from the country bear jamboree, i do have a love of animatronics that predated fnaf and bears are my favourite animal so the most prominent bear animatronics were definitely bouncing around in my head. the eye (and arm) simply came from the idea of a broken-down animatronic, giving him a reason to be in the workshop/backstage rather than on stage with the other animatronics, with the glowing and sparking being a way for him to be identifiable even in the dark. for the yellow ear and the ring around his eye, i wanted to introduce some secondary colour into his base theme besides just being a brown dog, and i thought some asymmetry would add visual interest (same with his pink tongue hanging out). at the same time i didn't want to overdesign the way some fan animatronics of the time did; the canon animatronics all tend to be pretty plain with a single or dual-colour base body and then one or two accessories on top of that, like chica being yellow and orange (two colours) and having her bib and cupcake (two accessories) or bonnie being blurple (one colour/two shades) and having a red bow tie (one accessory). even now i think the overalls were maybe overstepping that restraint a little but in general i think he fit the scheme of the others enough that he could reasonably pass off as being part of the gang.
in terms of gameplay mechanics, my thought processes only went as far as making him sound believable. so showing up in the workshop was just a way of setting him apart from the other animatronics, who didnt really go there. im afraid there wasn't really much work put into this aspect of him haha. nowadays i think he probably doesn't venture that far into the rest of the restaurant - after all, broken animatronics arent meant to be walking about! but he still likes to take a peek out there, because he wishes he was back on the stage with the rest of the band and misses performing with them.
