How do you spell this one...
Quilava? Qulava? Qwilava?
Power flower flower of love
This is so powerful. It invokes the idea of causing the father to fall simply by being kind and loving and singing with your siblings.
Serving Demogorgon vibes for the start of spooky season 🎃
Atolla gigantea is the largest Atolla species that occurs off the West Coast. This species of deep-sea crown jelly can reach a diameter of up to 15 centimeters (six inches). It is also a hefty animal with a bulky body. MBARI has only encountered this species a dozen times. Atolla belongs to the order Coronatae. Jellies in this order have a distinctive furrowed bell. A deep groove runs around the bell, separating the domed, lens-like top from the thick margin. The edge of the bell has wide segments, known as pedalia, that contain finger-like lappets. The thick edge of the bell resembles a crown, earning this group of jellies its regal name.
The deep-sea crown jelly is one of the most widely distributed jellyfish. The genus occurs worldwide, from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Scientists currently recognize 10 species of Atolla, but they can be hard to distinguish, and undoubtedly, some are undescribed species.
Learn more about these regal residents on the deep in our Animals of the Deep gallery.
Haunted placenta that eats fish
Did you see it pucker up, like "why are you this close to me?"
I hope you don’t mind that Im only answering this part of your question, but it was a lot to reflect on and unpack.
I think the best way I can describe it is like…. You know how when you do a puzzle, and most people start with the border and work their way inwards?
I think that most people are just the border of a puzzle.
I can look at a crowd and kind of guess whose finished picture is a landscape, or a bunch of balloons, or a classical painting. The colours and shapes give an impression that makes everybody a tiny bit different.
But then like… a LOT of people are puzzles of, say, a field of white flowers. And I can only see the border, so I have to think of like… which borders have more flowers or more grass, more grass or more sky, etc, and whatever is in the middle isn’t even put together yet.
But if someone’s border has, say, something fluorescent yellow in the top left- that makes them easier to differentiate from all the other field-of-white-flowers puzzles. I can remember that. And then later if the bottom half of the puzzle is covered, I can still see the big spot of neon yellow at the top, and remember that no other field-of-white-flowers have that.
And then like…. The more I see them, or the more unique features the have like tattoos or scars or birthmarks or whatever, unique proportions or deformities or injuries or gaits- the more pieces are filled in. So I can retain more parts of the picture in my head
So now instead of just being another border of a puzzle of a field of white flowers, YOU are a windmill in a field of white flowers, or a castle in á valley of white flowers, or a mix of white and red flowers.
And if I see someone often enough for long enough, I get so many pieces in their ten-thousand-piece puzzle that even with a few gaps, I still know exactly who they are, and can still pick them out of a crowd. Because I’ve filled in enough of the picture to know what it is
Like
Like. These aren’t literal. I can SEE your whole face in front of me. I could draw your portrait while I looked at you.
But until I’ve been in consistent contact with you over several years, the first two sketches are how you exist in my head
And from what I’ve heard from other people with face blindness, it’s not even the same for everyone
Does this make sense?
Prosopagnosia
The current research holds that it’s due to an atypical Fusiform Gyrus, which is a little structure in the back of the brain that, in “normal” folks, lights up specifically in response to human faces.
So. Basically. Face Blindness is what we call it when folks do not have the additional, specifically face-detecting hardware in their brain, and have to rely on the Object-Recognition hardware.
Granted, this is an area of active study, and more details may emerge with more research. We’ll see
😭 I was born with a fork where my screwdriver should be and I’m unforking screws better than you've ever seen it done
Imagine having this and not being an artist.
Did the suspect have high cheekbones? Did they have a pronounced eyebrow arch? What was the shape of their chin? Did they have lidded eyes?
What does that even look like? The second you show me a picture of what that looks like it's just that example in my memory now.

The lower pitched, lighter colored pavers in the first half of the video are made of concrete and the darker colored, higher pitched pavers at the very end are made of clay or shale :)
at the jfk museum. this place is kind of objectively funny as hell i think
"i love your earrings" thanks! its where jfk got shot
Found this image on the jfk museum website:
These are called breeze block! They're not referred to as bricks within the industry, because they're made of concrete. They're a type of CMU (concrete masonry unit), what most people call "cinder blocks".
The place I worked manufactured and sold two different designs! The most common shape around my area is a floral shape:
me about bricks
Major pet peeve in my own life is that the brick and mortar on the porch columns of my apartment don't match the rest of the building. It's not something most people would notice at first or maybe at all, but it drives me crazy.
The brick on the building is an old sandmold standard-size flashed burgundy brick and a plain buff mortar in a flush joint. If I were to match these, I would use Belden Brick's Belcrest 740 bricks. Those aren't available in standard size, but the modular size they're made in will work because it's the same height. (Matching size exactly doesn't really matter for columns or other projects where the brick isn't going to be laid directly into the existing brick wythes (in fact, the bricks on the columns are a bit longer and a bit less tall than the bricks on the house)). I'd match the mortar with Heidelberg's Old Colonial, the go-to for matching older structures, from their Flamingo colored mortar series. Heidelberg's premixed Old Colonial could also work.
The brick on the columns is just over 8 inches long and just under 2 1/4 inches tall, so it's a weird size. They may have been "seconds", meaning the factory screwed up and had to sell them at a discount. That would explain the mismatch -- mighta been a 1970s Landlord Special. Nonetheless, they're beautiful bricks. A rusty brown color with ironspot texture ("ironspot" is somewhat literal: the clay and/or shale is mixed with actual flecks of metal, usually manganese these days I think, that melts in the kiln and makes a sort of glaze of freckles on the surface of the brick!), laid with an almost-matching red mortar.
These bricks have to have been discounted, because it shouldn't have been at all difficult to match the brick on the existing building. The reason for the red mortar evades me; colored mortars are usually more expensive than plain mortar. More traditional colors like Old Colonial are popular enough to be not much pricier than the plain grey. Idk why tf they woulda done red, except maybe to hurt me personally.
this is exactly the type of rant i signed up to tumblr to see

having and loving trans friends is like. i will fight your parents. i will fight your exes. i will fight your family. i will fight your doctor.
there genuinely is something to be said about how every trans person ive met has been mistreated or hurt so badly. it breaks my heart and it has informed basically all my relationships with other trans people, i go out of my way to affirm their joys and uplift them and love them however i can. i think especially in this day and age trans people are very much in need of extra kindness and care. it doesnt need to be huge. but let your trans friends know you care, please. tell him that he looks handsome today. remind them that theyre really fun to be around. let her know that you like her jokes. hug it and hold it gently. be honest, be open. please, for all the love there is, be kind to trans people
