Portrait of Ena Wertheimer: A Vele Gonfie (1905). John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925). Oil on canvas. Tate.
Ena tilts her head back, looking over her shoulder. Her expression is confident and playful and the large scale of the portrait exaggerates her dramatic gesture. Emerging from beneath the cloak are the folds of a golden-coloured piece of clothing. This garment, along with the right side of her face and the white sleeve and plume of her hat, are the brightest parts of the painting.
