Something about this small exchange with 4 and X resonated with me the more i thought about it. At first, i felt so bad for Two when this happened. The fact that they actually reached out before, but wasn't unacknowledged by Four and X because they had "forgotten" didn't feel fair at all, especially to Two. They didn't do anything to deserve that kinda treatment :((
But when i thought about it more, it made so much sense to me why Four would do this. Four didn't forget, and he clearly never has, including X, but everything that had happened back then was clearly too much for both him and X. His actions may be justified as "protecting x" but maybe deep down even he knows that there mightve been something wrong with what he's doing. But he doesn't admit it, for two possible reasons. Either because of his own ego or he's just the kind of integer that doesn't get vulnerable around others that easily. Or at least, that's how i've personally seen Four as. Sure, there were several scenes in BFB where he acted "sad" or "upset", but those reactions felt pretty surface level to me at best. As if he's acting dumb and childish to hide how he actually feels, or rather, projecting those feelings into something else, like how violently he acted as a host back in pre split bfb. (although he's still pretty violent, i like to think its more toned down because of his own little development in BFB, even though it wasnt written very well imo)
I've always thought that him being a host of BFB was just a way for him to be someone different, be the "fun" one and be "the favorite" as Four himself puts it. All in order separate himself from his past self, even if that meant letting go of the morals he once had. (Example would be him being shown to be horrified of Three's death, but years later seems to be perfectly casual with killing objects. Or perhaps its just because he was conditioned to be ok with it from watching BFDI but moving on-)
His expressions while he trapped one in the moon showed his doubts, him second guessing himself. But even then, he never admitted to it, and now he has this guilt that he doesn't really know what to do with. So he casts away everything, his history, his past relationships, everything. All for the sake of letting go, forgetting and "moving on." The feeling of wanting to reset and start anew. This would've been hard to do if he were alone, but X has been with him this entire time. It may have been Four's decision, but X being with him and not going against that idea shows they were on the same page. I swear to god they definitely have these private conversations that only both of them know off camera which would explain how attached these two are to each other. Cuz in a literal sense, all they have is each other. They already threw away their family and their home, so to them, they are all they have left.
idk where this ramble was going but basically i understood that feeling of wanting to reset and throw everything away for the sake of moving on. The multiple times i wanted to "not care anymore" because i didn't want to deal with the feelings i had related to it, or cut off connections and forget about everything. So yea lets say it strung a bit of a personal chord pff
Augfhf the loyalty that both Four and X have to each other is insane and I wish they had the balls to show how they feel for each other more prominently. Or maybe thats just me with a hc of them as an old married couple LEAVE ME ALLOONEE
LIKE COME ON YOU DON'T JUST GO ALONG WITH EVERYTHING YOUR BEST FRIEND SAYS AND GET THIS EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED, OR HAVE THIS STRONG DESIRE TO BE SO PROTECTIVE OF SOMEONE WITHOUT FEELING SOME TYPE OF WAY TO THEM COME OONN
Anyway this doesnt justify what Four did btw, i think what he decided to do with Two or any other of his past friendships was fr fucked up, even if it was how he coped with things or if it was "for the best". This includes X, cuz he literally went along with it. Everything that's happening to Four is clearly built up karma for everything he's done up to that point. He may be my favorite character but what he seriously needed was actual consequences for his actions and i LOVE IT. I really wish to see even more messier arguments, or even literal FIGHT SCENES before coming to a conclusion where they finally talk it out, JNJ PLEEAAASEE
