Gideon’s eyes rolled at the other’s stubbornness; he wanted to snap that if he kept dawdling, they would both find themselves ripped to shreds in a matter of minutes and his papers would hardly matter then. But he saw a tenacious glint in the other’s eyes, and he knew that the man wouldn’t be dissuaded. So, rather than let him gather them together all on his own while he cursed in annoyance under his breath, Gideon decided to speed up the process. Falling to his knees, he picked up paper after paper as quickly and deftly as possible.

Kit gaped and moved to jerk from Gideon Stirling's grasp, but found it more difficult than he thought it might. Inhaling sharply, Gideon began to drag him inside. Not more than a mile away, Kit heard a wolf howl, its shriek sending a chill up his spine. He looked pitifully at the pile of papers dirtied by mud and, breathing heavily, he stumbled with Gideon into the nearest building.
