Summary: a blackout leads to the most honest conversation you’ve ever had with Kinger. In the dark he’s calm, and maybe a little obsessed with you.
The lights had seemed to go out again, the circus has seemed to be doing that a lot lately. Everything pretty much goes dark, with how big this place is, it can get a little overwhelming, you’d say. You hear the distant, muffled panic of someone far off, sounds like Pomni and you hear Jax's sharp laugh, but they were too distant to matter. The darkness pretty much swallowed everything around you so what's the point in trying to move?
Your back hit the warped wall of the storage tent you ducked into to try and calm down, you slid down until you were sitting on the cold floor, knees drawn up. You hated the dark here. It felt too familiar.
A soft creak of the floor hits your ears. Then a voice, low, "you're breathing too fast.”
You startled, but his shape was already there, folding itself beside you with surprising grace. In the pitch black you couldn’t see his chess piece body, only feel the faint static hum of his presence and the sudden, solid warmth of his large hand settling on your shoulder, were his fingers trembling?
“I thought you’d be uh...freaking out?” you whispered. “Are you-”
“I always do, don’t I?” he interrupts, voice quiet and even. “When I'm just old innocent Kinger.” his hand slid down your arm, mapping every inch like he’d done it a hundred times in his head. When he reached your wrist he circled it gently, thumb pressing over your wrist. “But in the dark” he murmured, closer now. “No one sees. No one interrupts. It's only you and me.”
Something in his tone made you feel uneasy, not fear exactly, but the realization that he seemed to be hiding something darker behind his clueless facade, you weren’t sure. You turned your head towards his voice. “Kinger…?”
His other hand found your cheek, large and warm, cradling your face with a care that felt almost reverent. His thumb brushed your lower lip once, then stayed there, like he was memorizing the shape of it. “You remind me of someone.” he confessed, so softly it was almost lost in the dark. “All the time, when you tease, when you let people lean on your shoulder, and those are pieces of you I want for myself.” His fingers tightened just slightly around your wrist, not enough to hurt, but enough that you felt the possessiveness behind it.
“Youre the only thing that reminds me of why I stay sane. So I decided, why not in the dark, where no one else can see, I can claim you as mine.” he leaned in until you could feel the faint, static warmth brush of his face against yours. His breath (is it even breath?) ghosted over your mouth.
“Tell me you feel it too.” he whispered. “Tell me you want me to touch you like this.” his hand left your wrist and slid to your waist, pulling you closer to him until your legs were tangled with the edge of his robe. The darkness made everything feel closer, heavier, like it was just the space between you two that existed. You swallowed hard. This wasn't the Kinger who screamed at centipedes, or forget your name. This was someone who had been perfectly terrifyingly aware of you the entire time.
The darkness held you both for a little while longer. Kingers hand stayed warm and steady on your waist, his voice a low, soothing rumble as he murmured things that made your face burn hotter than the sun. Every confession, every gentle but possessive touch, felt impossibly real in the pitch black. You were dizzy with it, heart racing, breath shaky, completely wrapped up in this secret, coherent version of him. Then, without warning-
The lights slammed back on with all the grace of a cannon. Harsh colors flooded the storage tent like nothing happened. Kinger yelped, a high pitches, familiar squeak, and flung himself backward so fast he knocked over a stack of dusty props.
“Gah! Where am I?” he cried, spinning in a frantic circle, hands flailing. You were still sitting on the floor, face flushed, feeling dizzy, lips still tingly from how close he’s been. Your brain hasn't caught up yet. His big asymmetrical eyes blink at you, head tilting slightly. “Oh, hello, did we…hide together? That was nice of you, very brave.” you opened your mouth, closed it. Heat crawled up your neck as you remembered every single thing he’d said in the dark.
“You’re, already mine.” and “tell me you feel it too.”
He offered you a hand, the same hand that had been cradling your face five seconds ago, and helped you up. The tent flap burst open.
“There you are!” Pomni poked her head in, looking frazzled. She stopped, her eyes flicked from your obviously flustered face to Kinger’s completely innocent expression.
Jax appeared right behind her, grinning like he’d just won the lottery. “Ohooo~look at that, someone's glowing brighter than the gloink hole.” ragatha peeked in next, eyebrows shooting up “oh my gosh…are you okay-?”
“Did I miss something?” Kinger asked cheerfully, brushing his robe. “We were just hiding. From the dark!” you tried to speak but only managed a strangled squeak.
Caine suddenly materialized above all of you in a puff of confetti. “Wonderful! Everyone's accounted for! The system had a bit of a crisis. Nothing to be worried about! Now who's ready for today's adventure?!” zooble leaned against the tent's entrance, “wanna bet they were making out?”
“Uh i dont think so.” kinger said, confused. “Did we? I feel like I would remember that, it sounds important.” you buried your burning face in your hands, “we weren't!”
Jax slung an arm around your shoulders, smarking. “Relax newbie. Your face is doing all the talking. Real cute." Pomni gave you a sympathetic look. “You okay?” Kinger perked up. “Of course she is, she was with me!!” you peeked through your fingers to find him beaming at you with pure, oblivious affection, the same man who had just spent ten minutes telling you how he wanted to keep you all to himself. Your heart did a stupid little flip.
“Come on,” ragatha said kindly, taking your arm. “Let's get you out of here.” As you moved toward the main tent, jax leaned in and whispered loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Next time I wanna watch.” Kinger tilted his head towards you both, seemingly lost. “Did something cool happen? You look really red, it's not a bad color on you, very pretty.” you groaned, half laughing, half dying inside, and just smiled at him. This is gonna be totally normal.
