Headcanon that helps me sleep at night:
2 weeks before leaving for college Mike's still debating if going to Illinois or NY, he can't sleep so he tries to write something, that ususally helps, he gets up and walks to his desk but his sight is captured once again by the painting perfectly placed next to the window, moonlight carefully iluminating it, he hasn't been able to stop thinking aboit it ever since El died, thousands of trains of thoughts that he quickly brushed off because he knew deep down that he didn't want to realise the answer, but right now at this moment there's no time for such things, time'd running out and he needs to get his shit toghether, he sighs before letting himself go, questions inmediatly surrounding his head but every single one of them lead to the same one, how was it possible that the painting was comisioned by El if she never knew anything about D&D? He tried to teach her once but it was useless, the only thing she ever understood was that her character was the mague and no more, and... suddenly she knows all of the party's roles? and not only that but she knows the thessalhydra and uses a metaphore to represent his role as the Paladin?
"It doesn't make sense..." he whispered as he got closer and closer to the painting.
He started to scroll through his memories trying to find any clue to confirm that it was El's idea and finally put an end to all the nonsense he jad been thinking about.
"Will's painting a lot lately, he won't let me see, i think he's painting for a girl he likes"
El's letter was the only thing he could think about but there was no way, it would be a tremendous coincidence if it happened to be the same painting, it just can't be. He kept thinking.
"Oh it's just a painting that i've been working on"
The Cali airport was the next stop in his mind, now he was starting to feel weird about it, to many things clicked but still not enoigh ti convince him. Or maybe he didn't wanted to convince himself as he was afraid, as he always had been.
"Can i show you something?"
But the final memory was the one that couldn't be denied, at the van, when he had seen the painting for the first time, it was him, it was him who the painting was meant for, and then Will started talking about El's feelings...
"Holly shit" his eyes widened as he couldn't stop the train of feelings that was unleashed inside of him "He wasn't talking about El..."
His eyes travelled though the room as if the walls couldn give him more answers, amd surprisingly they did, next to the painting laid Mike's decorative sign that ironically was next to his closet before, a sign that read "one way" with an arrow that pointef directly at Will's art, Will's feelings, Will's heart.
He didn't let more time pass, he made his way out of the window hoping that he had learned something after watching Jonathan do that endless times at Nancy's room. Once he landed he started running, adrenaline filling his brain, he couldn't think straight but at the same time it was the most sane that he has ever been in a long time.
"What the-" Will whispered as his sleep was interrupted by a repetitive sound on his window "Mike?"
On the other side of the glass was Mike, who had just ran what felt like a thousand miles and looked a mess, he signaled to Will to open the window.
"Mike it's like two in the morning, what are you doi-"
"It wasn't El right?" he interrupted Will.
"The painting, it wasn't El who told you to do it... right?" Will's faced turned pale as he hard Mike's words.
"Mike... we can do this tomorrow"
"No, just tell me... please"
"I- I don't know what you want to hear"
Seconds of silence surrounded them as both tried to gain enougj courage to speak up.
"It was me wasn't it?" Mike finally said.
"When we were planing how to kill Vecna, and at the squak you told us... your secret, you- you said that you liked someone... a guy that you liked but in the end he was just your Tammy, whatever the hell that means, you- you were talking about me? I was the guy..."
Will sighed as he realised he couldn't escape this time.
"Look... Mike i'm- i'm sorry okay? is that what you want to hear? i clearly made things weird for a long long time and- and i didn't wanna tell you about the painting because... it was the only thing you had left fron El and i didn't want to take thst away from you, and now i just did so... yeah you were the guy, and i'm just sorry"
"Were..." Mike repeated in a murmur after letting Will finish "So... you don't like me anymore?"
"Do you still... like me?"
"Why are you asking all this questions?" Will's voice cracked as he finally faced the feelings he had been hiding for so long.
"Because I... I wanna know, i need to know"
"No you don't, Mike it's better if we leave things like this, please"
"No, I can't just leave like that"
"I already answered, what more do you want?" tears acumulated in his green eyes.
"I don't want to be your Tammy" Mike replied harshly, Will looked at him with an expression I couldn't decipher.
"What do you mean?" but instead of words for an answer he received a kiss.
Clumsy, desperate and full of passion and love, letting out all the feelings that they both had repressed, finally letting go.
After a few minutes they separated from the kiss, both out of breath and looking intensely at each others eyes.
"I'm choosing New York" Mike catched his breath to talk.
"College, i'm choosing New York, with you" Mike's hands held on to Will's waist as if it was the end of the world. Will laughed silently, still looking into his dark brown eyes.
