Hey, remember late last year when everyone (in Australia) lost their shit over a Sydney production not casting a nb/trans person in the role of Hedwig and harassed the ousted lead actor online so badly he had to put himself under suicide watch? Well, as it turns out they did cast a nb actor - that same actor who put themselves on suicide watch after being bullied online - they just were not ready to be out yet.
So not to be a fandom old about it, but you know how thereβs that big debate over whether or not LGBT roles have to be played by LGBT actors? Many more of them are played by LGBT actors who for whatever reason are not ready to be out yet (or ever.) And itβs truly none of your business.
Adding to this, there are a ton of reviews for the film version of Hedwig on Letterbox that gave it 1 star solely on the premise that it βwasnβt written by non-binary peopleβ.
Cut to earlier this month and both John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask have come out as non-binary.
Just because a person isnβt out, doesnβt mean they are cis/straight.
Wynonna Earp cast two cishet women as a lesbian/bisexual couple. Since then, both of them have come out as not straight (I donβt believe either of them have ever labeled themselves but their words seem like theyβre both pan to me) and Dom is gender fluid and nonbinary. Both of them have credited their roles and the welcoming LGBT+ fanbase show as helping them realize they werenβt straight. Those roles helped them see past heteronormativity and explore their own identities.
Stop demanding personal information from actors and creators. If the representation is problematic, letβs talk about it. But if theyβre doing a good job at portraying LBGT+ issues and people and relationships, let them live their lives in peace.
This is just like the situation with the short story βI sexually identify as an attack helicopter,β by Isabel Fall, a story exploring gender, sexuality and violence, which used the transphobic copypasta as a title in the same way many members of the LGBTQ community have reclaimed some pejoratives over time. The author didnβt give out much personal information and so the internet piled on, accusing her of being transphobic. The author was recently revealed to be a trans woman who stopped her transition because of how she was treated and spoken about by members of her own community and other critics on the internet.
#to make this clear harassment isnβt okay even if the actors truly were cishet
She gets it

Reasons Kingdom Hearts games are super good, actually,Β
Subtitles are turned on by default
Theyβre never condescending via game difficulty. Easy mode is calledΒ βa mode you can breeze through!β and the hard mode is calledΒ βfor players that like an extra challenge!β Thereβs no making fun of the player for choosing easy mode!
Thereβs casual reminders that tutorials are in the menu after you learn new skills
The games donβt punish you for not using every single mechanicΒ
Thereβs an ability in KH3 that lets you turn leveling off for no real reason and I think thatβs hilariousΒ
Youβre not punished for failing, you donβt lose significant progress when you die, you restart from the last encounter or the last save point and the game doesnβt beat the shit out of you for kicks
Mechanics are intuitive! There is a natural progression of button usage and itβs very easy on the hands
Subtitles are enabled as the default
I recently saw a meme on Facebook that said something along the lines ofΒ βhow to make a millennial panic: lock them in a room with only a phone book and a rotary phone and write the instructions in cursive!β It had this smugΒ βaha, gotchaβ vibe oozing out of it, and itβ¦just sort of made me laugh. Like, really? Really? But it also made me thinkβ¦
Beyond the fact that I know how to use both a phone book and a rotary phone and can read cursive (as long as itβs not too horrifically messy), I think it was the attitude ofΒ βOh no, weβve got you because you couldnβt possibly figure out how to use something thatβs new to youβ that really made me snort. But I think thatβs the key to this and similar memes that Iβve seen.
They donβt think we could figure out how to use something new to us, because they canβt do it.Β
Like, if you presented a millennial with a rotary phone or a phone book and they had never, ever used one or seen one used before, I can guarantee pretty much any millennial could figure out how to use it. Because thatβs what we do: we adapt. Weβve been through so many variations of technology and seen so many new forms of technology emerge that weβve had to learn to adapt swiftly and fluidly. Itβs second nature to us.
Put a boomer in a room with a smartphone, laptop, and tablet however, and wellβ¦different story.
Iβm not sure if they literally donβt understand that presenting a millennial with something they havenβt encountered before would not be an obstacle and certainly not a panic-inducing one, or if they just say things like that to make themselves feel better that they couldnβt do the equivalent, or if itβs a combination of the above.
I just realized that the original meme is also, quite accidentally, basically describing the principle behindβ¦.. escape rooms.
You know, the recent popular trend in participatory entertainment in which thousands of millennials literally go out and pay money to voluntarily be locked in a room where they have to solve puzzles under a time pressure, often using antiquated or analog technology, secret codes, and mechanisms they donβt yet understand, all without using their phones/the internet. For fun.
For many of us, thatβs not panic-inducing, thatβs just our idea of an enjoyable Saturday night out with some friends!
Now Iβm just laughing even harder.
They also forgot about us vintage millennials, like some of us are in our mid-to-late 30s. We had rotary phones still in the house & phone books arenβt reallyβ¦mysterious anyway but, yeah, I used the white & yellow pages. We literally watched technology explode into what it is now.

It's been two years and I still don't know what to say. It still kinda feels like he'll come back soon, like he's enlisted and I'm just waiting on him returning.
πππππππππππππππππ
πππππππππππππππππIt's hard knowing there won't be any more photos and videos of him, no more music to come, no more of his writing or unique views of the world.
πππππππππππππππππ
ππππππππππππππππThis man taught me a lot. He was soft, sensitive, loved fiercely. He was a total dork and loved making his members laugh. He was there for his friends. He was truly precious and it still kills me that such a beautiful person was suffering so much.
πππππππππππππππππ
ππππππππππππππππLet's take a minute to remember this amazing man who wrote amazing songs, for his members, himself and other idols.
πππππππππππππππππ
πππππππππππππππππ I hope you're resting easy and keeping an eye on your loved ones.
You wanted to know you did well and you suffered a lot. You did, you did your best and tried to make it through the hard times.
