A little look inside my upcoming Spice-tember book, Be-Djinn At The Beginning! I was planning to wait on sharing this but I’m in my feelings today and I need to talk about something pleasant instead of world stuff. I’m excited about this story - it’s shorter than You Give Me Fever but like waayyy longer than the assignment suggested, and it basically wrote itself.

I get it now when the authors I work with talk about how excited they are for people to meet their characters - I want you to love Beatrix and Sahar (or Jack O’ the Tree as she calls him).

Yes I am insane, I’m doing yet another book, also coming out in September!

As mischief and spices fill the air and the barrier between worlds grows thinner, an ancient creature takes a break from answering the wishes of greedy men to join the festivities in a small English village. Sahar is looking for a party and some irresponsible behavior before he returns to servitude and trickery as a Djinn, but instead he finds a lonely young girl offering a gift and letter. Well, why not? It could be amusing to scare her.

But Beatrix is not scared - in fact, the mystery of her new friend only draws her in deeper. Every year, for the three days where creatures from the other side can touch her world, Bea exchanges letters with what she calls Jack O’ the Tree, her dearest friend who never shows his face or tells her where he’s been. Maybe they both would be happy to continue in this way forever, but children grow, feelings change, and before either of them know it, Beatrix is grown, and engaged to be married to someone she hardly knows.

Now Sahar is caught. He can’t lose her, but there are some rules even he can’t break. If only there were some words she could say to make him help her before the clock runs out on All Soul’s Day.

It may be the last day of June but Pride will keep going all year because every day we get to be proud to be ourselves without apology and to lean on each other for community and love. Just this month, I have been sent “gays are demons” memes, been called ret***ed for wishing someone in my community a happy Pride, and -possibly my favorite - a “libt*ard grammy”, on tumblr of all places. It can feel like the world is getting uglier and more harsh but we need to remember that first of all, most of these comments are bots, and second, love is always stronger. Love for your partner, your friends, your community, your family, your chosen family, YOUR SELF, will always trump hate, fear, and ignorance.

By now y’all know how I feel about AI. If you don’t yet understand that it’s stealing and also incredibly harmful for the environment, feel free to hit me up and ask and I won’t yell at you. Ask a person, though, don’t ask chat gpt. It’s okay to not know, but it’s not okay to know and refuse to do better.

I’ve been trying - in between my actual work for the books of other fine folks - to create some chapter header illustrations for my upcoming spicy book, You Give Me Fever. I just sent it to the editor last night - eeep! - so I may have to scramble to get these all finished in time. Here are the first three, plus a wee snippet from chapter three.

One day they invited their more yard-work-friendly family members over with ladders and chainsaws and (with kids climbing on or playing right under the branches they were sawing) chopped that whole huge beautiful tree down to a stump. No idea why - it was healthy and strong and not a hurricane hazard. The branches were thrown in the wooded area behind both our properties, which is a major hazard in the hot dry summer when there are fire advisories, and they dried up and died out there.

The stump, valiantly, kept trying to bounce back. Little shoots and leaves would spring up only to be hacked back down. It grew little white flowers and those were cut off and the stump shaved down even smaller. More leaves burst out in defiance - they made a hole in the center of the stump and lit a fire inside it.

Every time the tree tried to rise up and grow again in spite of what had been done to it, I looked outside and hoped - maybe this time they would leave it alone. Maybe this time they would decide they can’t kill something beautiful. Every time they hacked, yanked, chopped, and burned it back down. Finally the stump is just sitting there dead, offering no leaves and no shade and no beauty, while its limbs sit dead and crispy in the 93 degree heat behind our home.

For a while, I thought there couldn’t be a more apt metaphor for what this administration is doing to our country, its people, our hope and our beauty.

Giving y’all an unusual one this Monday - this was a piece done years ago for an author who didn’t wind up going ahead with the book and wanted more of a vector style for the cover. That’s not something I’ve ever done before and it was a super fun challenge. I always like trying out different styles if I can.
