why do cats run like BADUNK BADUNK BADUNK

and in stairs like DUNKDUNKDUNK

It's because cats are technically a non-newtonian fluid. The more force they are under, the more solid they become. You can see this in action when you try to put a protesting cat into a carrier or when you see them melt in relaxation.

While they are running on the stairs, gravity is putting more force on them, which makes them more solid. Therefore, they get a bigger DUNKDUNK sound compared to normal running.
