did you leave any crumbs? did you slay?
Um? I try not to leave crumbs when I eat... And I tend to clean them up after, though I suppose there may have been times where I neglected to do so on accident...
............ Considering my presence in Milgram, I believe you know the answer to that.
Do you prefer snakes or vines?
Ah? What a strange question... They're very different things, aren't they? A snake is an animal, and a very cute one at that... their venom can be used to create antivenoms, it's really intruiging... though I don't have much knowledge on it, seeing as I'm not a biologist. Though, vines, or plants that grow as vines, can be beautiful as well. My wife grew some vined plants in our home... in smaller pots, of course.
... Ah, I'm getting off topic. I suppose I'd say both. They both have their own merits.
did you eat today? did you serve?
I did eat today, yes. Thank you for your concern. Though... ah, 'serve'..? As in... provide something for someone else? I don't believe I have...
Would you like me to 'serve' someone something..? It's a strange request, but I suppose I don't mind...

Mahiru, satisfied with her drawing, finally lifts the notebook to reveal her work to Shidou.
“Ta-da! I drew you and Kazui-san! Aren’t you two so cute?~”
Giggling, she slides the notebook and the pencil back to Shidou.
“Your turn! What do you want to draw? Or do you want to surprise me?” she asks, curiously looking up at him.
He turns back to look, hands still politely folded on his lap.
"Ah..? That's very cute, Shiina-kun... You've captured both of our likenesses very well. Really, you've got quite some artistic skill... You've even drawn my moles" He smiles, pointing to the moles on his face.
It reminds him of......
"...... Oh, hm... I suppose... I will surprise you, then..." He gently takes the notebook and pencil, setting it down on his lap. "... Do try not to look... it would be better as a surprise." He asks gently.
“I would never ever forget your moles. I think it’s one of your most defining features! Lots of people call them ‘beauty marks,’ instead of moles, when they’re on your face. I always see models with beauty marks in my women’s magazines,” Mahiru eagerly explains.
She turns her head away from him and shuts her eyes to avoid seeing the notebook.
“Okay! I won’t peek! Just let me know when you are done.~”
"Ah... really now? Well... I suppose they are pretty. My wife had moles under her eyes, too... They really were 'beauty marks' on her... She was very pretty."
He flips to a new page, doodling something, extremely focused, then stares at it for a moment before holding it up.
"... I drew you and Kashiki-kun, since you seem to have become friends..." He says, smiling, seeming somewhat proud of himself.
Mahiru gasps, delicately taking the notepad from Shidou to inspect it up close.
Despite the shaky penciled lines, Mahiru finds it endearing, like one would with a young child’s artwork.
“Aww!~ You made us look so cute! I haven’t had my portrait drawn in forever… so this is really special to me! Can I keep this page?” she requests, fluttering her eyelashes in an attempt to convince Shidou.
"I'm glad you like it, Shiina-kun... Yours was very cute, as well." He smiles at her, seeming somewhat proud of himself. "Ah, of course ... You can take the page, I don't mind. I'm honoured that you like it that much..."
It reminded him of drawing with his sons. He misses them.
“Of course I do! I’ll have to show Yuno-chan, too. I’m sure that she will love it just as much as I do!” Mahiru exclaims.
Carefully, she tries to free the page from the notebook, doing her best not to damage it. Again, it proves much harder than anticipated, unable to use her other arm to steady the notebook.
Luckily, she manages, but the hole punctures had left jagged edges along the top of the page. She sets it down on her lap to avoid creasing it.
“Hmm… my turn…” Mahiru picks up the pencil, absentmindedly drumming it against the new blank page. “Should I surprise you again?”
"Haha, I hope so... I did try." He smiles. "I tend to doodle a bit, just to pass the time... I believe I've drawn... Everyone here, at least once... Just out of boredom."
He reaches out awkwardly to try and help, but it seems Mahiru had it handled, and he places his hands back in his lap politely.
"ah..?" He tilts his head at her slightly, curious. "... You can surprise me, if you'd like. I'd appreciate anything, really. Your drawings are very cute... And I appreciate the effort alone, as well."
“Thank you! I am having a lot of fun with this already!” Mahiru turns the notebook away from view, pausing for a moment, before starting to scribble on the page.
“I wish that we had colored pencils or markers here. It would be so fun to experiment with them, too. Also, you’ll have to show me your self-portraits of everyone else here! I’ll try not to steal your other portrait of me,~” Mahiru jokes, briefly glancing up to give him a mischievous smile, before returning her focus to her drawing.
Then, she rotates the notebook on the bed to face him, dropping the pencil beside it.
“All done! I wanted to draw some animals using hearts! It was a trick I learned when I was little. This is how I draw my doggy…” Mahiru says, pointing to her first sketch, before dragging her finger towards the next, “and then this is that cute bunny that follows Es-kun around sometimes.~”
"Ah... That would be nice. I'm sure the younger kids would enjoy that, too... I wonder if Mukuhara-san or Kashiki-kun could request them." He muses. "Of course, of course... They should be somewhere in the notebook, I believe... I spend much of my time just doodling, to pass it by..."
"Ah..? You have a dog, Shiina-kun?" He asks politely, looking at the little drawings on the notebook. They're very cute, really. "Could you tell me more about it..? They're very cute drawings, really. You have quite the skill."
“That’s really sweet of you to say! I love making cute drawings.~” Mahiru props her elbow against the bed, resting her chin against her palm. “I used to have a dog. She isn’t gone, though! I put her in someone else’s care because I couldn’t take her with me and my boyfriend, even though I really wanted to…”
Mahiru smiles, a hint of melancholy in her eyes as she recalled the memory.
“I know it’s not the same, but I think it’s the closest I could get to taking care of a baby. Maybe I will be able to see her again one day. She might even have a doggy boyfriend by then.~”
"Ah..? My condolences... I'm sure that you'll be able to reunite with her, some day. It must have been hard, having to leave her behind." He says, trying to comfort her somehow. "I'm sure she misses you as well."
He hums, thinking to himself.
"I'm sure you could have children, somewhere down the line. You've got your whole life ahead of you... Though, I have heard of people "practicing" with pets, first. I'm sure you'd make a good parent." He smiles. "... Ah, maybe... That would be quite cute."
“I really hope I could be a good parent… maybe I will have to practice with pets once I get everything sorted out.”
Mahiru chuckles, though, there is a note of uncertainty in her voice.
“…Is it weird to hope that someone misses you, but not too much? I don’t want her to feel sad about me being gone. But I guess I do want to believe that there’s someone who wants to see me. Even if they are just a puppy, hehe…”
Her gaze returns to the sketch of her dog.
“I wish that I could show you an actual picture of her, too. She’s so much cuter in real life.”
"Mm, maybe. Though, I'm sure you'd be a wonderful parent... Even if not now, you could certainly learn to be one. You have the love that a child needs."
He fidgets with the blanket. "... I don't think so. It's... Always nice, to know someone misses you... That someone wants to see you again. It's... Nice. To have that constant presence... To know there's something to look forward to."
He's silent for a moment, tugging at his gloves.
"... Ah, I'm sure she is... I didn't have pets, but my sons... They always wanted a dog or a cat, haha."
“Dogs and cats do need more maintenance, so I imagine that getting one would be more hectic when you’re already juggling two little ones. I hear that lots of families start out with fish instead. Hehe… I have thought about this sort of thing a lot.~”
She twirls her hair around her finger, failing to suppress a grin. Shidou’s words about being a “wonderful parent” seemed to have flattered her quite a bit… even if it wasn’t a reality yet.
“Thank you, by the way. You’re being too nice.~”
"Haha... I'm sure they would have put up a fuss if I got them a fish instead of a dog or cat... though, they seemed content with being told 'when you're older'... Ah... they really were good kids."
He continues to tug at his gloves, before he picks up the notebook gently.
"... Ah, I'm not exaggerating... really, you have the passion and care to become a wonderful parent." He insists gently, absentmindedly drawing something. "No one starts out perfect, after all. You seem willing to learn... which is something you need to do as a parent."
As Shidou begins to draw, Mahiru turns her head away from him to avoid looking at the notebook. Although not instructed to look away, she seemed to enjoy the “surprise” factor.
“I’m more than willing to learn. That’s why I’m happy that you’re giving me advice and all. Even if I can’t use it right now, I definitely will one day. No matter how long that may be.” Mahiru chuckles softly.
He laughs lightly as Mahiru turns away. It's sweet of her, to try to find joy even in these situations. He couldn't do that if he tried.
"Mhm... it's always good to learn. I'm sure... there will come a time where all that you've learnt will help. I'm sure of it." He assures her gently, before setting down his pencil.
"Ah... here, I've drawn the rabbit that follows Es-kun around, as well.... and a ray. I... I just like them."
“Awww!” Mahiru reaches out, taking the notebook to get a better look again. “Shidou-san, the way you draw animals is so cute!~ I love them!”
She seems curious about the ray, tilting her head.
“I like rays, too. They feel so slippery, but it’s cute watching them swim around! Have you ever pet one at the aquarium?”
"Ah..? I'm glad, haha." He smiles, somewhat proud of his work, or at least not ashamed in the slightest. "They're not quite as cute as the ones you drew... But I believe they are passable."
He smiles. "I have. The last time I went to an aquarium... A few years ago, right before we got married... My wife and I. I pet one of the rays in the touch pool... They're very cute. We got too busy to visit the aquarium after marriage, especially when my son was born, but... We... always intended to bring them, one day." He looks downcast, staring at his hands. "... We should have gone sooner." he mutters.
“Ah…” Mahiru murmurs, frowning slightly. “…I’m really sorry about that. I can understand it, too.. going to the aquarium with your partner seems really romantic, and it’s something that I wanted to experience… with him.”
After flipping to the next blank page, she grabs the pencil and begins to sketch.
“Even if you didn’t get to go with your sons, I am happy that you did with your wife. Did she like rays, too?”
"There's no need to be sorry. I... I made good memories, while I could." He tries to smile at her. "It... really is a romantic experience. Just... talking to her, laughing with her, watching the fish... It made me fall even deeper in love with her. Ah, she bought me a plush toy of a ray, too..."
He sits politely and patiently as Mahiru sketches something, making sure not to peek in case she wanted it to be a surprise.
"Ah, she did, yes... She said she liked the way they moved so gracefully... and how cute they were." He tugs at his gloves. "...Though, she likened me to a jellyfish once... then took it back when I pointed out jellyfish don't have brains... haha. It was cute of her."

i wanted to send this anonymously so just pretend 😔 guess who (sniles sneetly)
Ah. These are certainly... effortful creations. I am especially drawn to the "Forg". It is very cute. It certainly seems difficult to decorate a cake... and so, I do applaud the effort and skill it takes to create these. Thank you for showing these to me.

Who... who is there?
Mm, birthdays are not personally important to me, but I shall accept your wishes. Some cake would also be nice to-

Begone, Kirisaki Shidou.
[ Still, it is nice to celebrate. ]

[ ...What's this about cake? I have some pancakes in the kitchen, somewhere. Just for old times sake. ]
There is nothing about cake. Do not bring that up. There was no reason to.
And I do not want your pancakes either. Those are needless temptations.
...Though maybe it would not hurt to take a bit-
No! Get out of my head, Kirisaki Shidou!
[Ah? Are you sure? I'm quite certain I heard something, Amane...]
[ They're not temptations. Though they are needless, they're still nice to have. It really wouldn't hurt. ]
[ I'm not in your head, I assure you. That would be concerning... ]
[ Ah, though, I suppose a ghost is equally as concerning..? ]
You heard nothing. That is solely your imagination.
Anything unnecessary is harmful. There is no such thing as "nice to have."
And is there really much difference between a ghost and a voice in one's head?
(Amane finds herself in the kitchen, staring at a plate of pancakes.)
H-how?
(She picks it up, turns to the side, and flips it as if it would land in someone's face.)
[ Don't lie, Amane. ]
[ Unnecessary things can still be nice. I assure you that's the truth. ]
[ ... Well, it's up to you, isn't it? Whether a ghost is nothing more than a voice in your head. ]
[ Ah, would you look at that. ]
[ It's the pancakes. You can eat them, you know. ]
[ They're for you. ]
Well, the pancakes are already on the ground. I am not one to try licking them off the ground. That would be gross.
(Amane paces around the kitchen.)
There are ingredients in the refrigerator, but-
No! Leave me alone, doctor-
(All of a sudden, she stumbles and falls to the ground, faceplanting on the pancakes.)
Ugh... disgusting... I can't believe I fell over again...
(The toppings taste nice...)
No!
[ That is true. It would not be very sanitary to eat off the ground ]
[ Though, I can always tell you how to make pancakes, if you'd like. You can hear me, after all. ]
[ Oh. ]
[ Oh dear. ]
[ They taste nice, but it isn't very sanitary to eat off the ground ]
[ Do get up. I wish I could help, but, well. ]

"Ah... here, I've drawn the rabbit that follows Es-kun around, as well.... and a ray. I... I just like them."
....ah?
"Repent, or face the wrath of the Amane army."
That's nice, Amane.
"We have warned you many many mANY TIMES, and still you continue on your wretched way!"
[Continuation reply!]
