Arabella was happy for Kiran, of course, and suitably impressed too, but her heart still clenched in sympathy. To have this kind of talent and future, only to have it ripped away⌠âThere will be. I canât promise you that, but Iâd like to think the Order can make a change for better. And that one day people like you will be able to go back to their bright futures.â The last bit she added with a smile and reached out to give Kiranâs hand a soft squeeze. She wasnât sure if she believed that this could, would, really happen, but she did believe it was what Kiran deserved to hear; she was clearly upset, and understandably so.
But she also just as clearly didnât want Arabella to notice and so she didnât. Instead, she swiftly moved to look away, as if looking at the flowers. âTrust is⌠complicated right now, yes. But there are layers to it, I think. You can trust in somebodyâs abilities, for example, without necessarily trusting the person themself. Or in their actions if not their intentions. So I donât think we should close ourselves off from trust entirely, that wouldnât be natural. Just⌠use some caution.â
Those were all very heavy topics, though, and Arabella really didnât want to add more weight onto Kiranâs shoulders. Clearing her throat, she tried to lighten her tone. âActually, I think I might need a favour, after all. Itâs not at all urgent or important so please donât feel any pressure to agree, but I have this idea and it might give you a project to work on if you still want one.â The idea in question had only just crossed her mind, actually, but she was very determined to find a pleasant distraction for Kiran. âWhat exactly can you make out of metal? Because my sisterâs birthday is coming up and I was thinking that maybe I could give her a little trinket. It doesnât have to be anything fancy, maybe even just a little snake. And again, you donât have to agree to this at all if you donât want to; I wonât be offended, I promise.â
Kiran smiled, glad to hear a bit of faith, even if it wasnât from someone who could know for certain. It was comforting. Arabella in general was comforting. Perhaps most wix wouldnât have agreed with her assessment, but Kiran felt safe with her. Maybe she couldnât do magic, but so what? Kiranâs mother couldnât do magic, and she was and always had been safety. Magic might have given people more skills, but it couldnât give them that essence. Some people just had it. Some people just felt like home.
âCautionâs good,â Kiran said, trying to keep her voice light. Was it caution what she was doing? Others might say she was running, but that wasnât fair. This wasnât caution for herself, not really. It was caution for her mother. It was caution to keep someone she cared about safe. Sheâd warded her parentsâ house as well as she could before disappearing on her mother. Hopefully it wouldnât be too long before she could carry through with it.
The thought of a task to do helped, though, and Kiran brightened as she listened to Arabellaâs request. âIâve never done a snake before, but it canât be that different than wing movement,â she decided. âHmmm, perhaps not full body movement. Then sheâd just have to chase it about. Perhaps just a moving head on a coil. That would probably be easy to figure out. How soon is it coming up? I could start practicing with this.â She held up the lump Arabella had brought her. âOnce I have the basics, I can have one of the McKinnon owls send you what metal properties are going to be best for it. Then i could try the real thing.â She thought one of her book had talked about animal movement. As close as a snitch was to a real bird, classical snitch makers often had an affinity for nature, and Kiranâs master had been no different.â
