The remnants of dusk illuminated the horizon line cotton candy pink. Vasilija loitered in the back alley of a Mexican restaurant, nose filled with the pungent fumes of roasted chiles and cilantro. Her presence was no mistake. She was patiently lying in wait. For what, she would not tell, but James was certainly not her target. The half-glance she shot in his direction upon his arrival was more than proof of that.

James was nothing short of an anomaly. For all her charms, Vasilija's appeal certainly had a limit. A finality, a punctuation mark that made people revile her. If it wasn't her innate cruelty or her often inevitable disinterest, it was her overall poor manners. In short, she was not to everyone's tastes. But James was persistent despite Vasilija's colder aspects. For what reasons, she could not discern ( not that she'd asked, either. ) With enough silent dismissal cues, people tended to catch a hint and back off, but not James. Like a hungry buzzard to fresh carrion, he persisted.

( Frankly, it was a little endearing. )

James, chasing her, in so many words, like a petulant child. A kitten running down its play mouse. Vasilija pried her gaze from the sliver of parking lot she'd been attentively observing and aimed it at James. A stare like the ice-cold glaciers of the north. Reaching, she grabbed his shirt collar and yanked him close. So close that her mouth stalled mere centimeters from his. Her eyes drifted to his mouth and back to his eyes. And how deliberate that sensual action was. ( Damn if she didn't know how to drive someone crazy. )

"I'm not your toy, James."

With that, she released her vice grip upon him, pressing her palm against his chest to give him a light push. Her attention lost to the quiet parking lot once more.

"What, like a husband? A fiance?" The question immediately succeeded @desiderixm's assumption, punctuated by the fluidity in which Vasilija slapped the flap of the first aid satchel shut. She arched a red brow as revulsion withered her mouth. Palpable disgust. The expression, however, was gone as quickly as it arrived, replaced with indifference. "No."

The stitch work on Tarhos's side was remarkably adept. Bloody and uneven, but proof of prior experience. Yet still Vasilija eyed her handiwork the way an artist eyes its masterpiece: dissatisfied, but unwilling to restart.

"Wanderin' off alone, tempting as it sounds, would be suicide. So guess you'll all suffice for the time being, stench and all." She extended a roll of bandage to Tarhos with a smile.

I think part of it is because she simply has no desire to. The past is the past, who cares, yadda yadda type shit. But I think there's another aspect to it, too. Perhaps one she doesn't consciously regard.

Captain Vasilija obviously had a crew for the entirety of her reign as pirate—a crew consisting of many of the same people throughout the decades. When she opted to abandon ship, so to speak, and hang up the tricorn, she ensured her crew was taken care of prior to disappearing somewhere in America.

Time stretched on. When she reappeared in the American West in the 1860s, again, she had a gang around her. But when her time as a cowboy came to an end, she set off completely on her own and remained alone until she met Loki and co.

Loki took a hearty sip from his paper coffee cup, savoring the sweetness on his tongue, even as the subject matter in question threatened to curdle it.

"Immortality's a fallacy," he quipped. And a fallacy he had proven, though in another time, in a different place, with an array of people he no longer associated with. The memory burned acidic, a cruel reminder. ( He still had trust issues with apples to this day. ) "I've seen its demands and its cost; I don't get the appeal."

Loki pursed his lips, discontent wrinkling the space between his brows.

"Yet I understand the fear of death, too. How it drives people to make vapid decisions." Anything to avoid death. To prevent the inevitable. A defiance against nature.

"But what do I know." Loki shrugged, eyes drifting to Spencer. "I'd like to die one day, just not yet."

The sun burned hot and dry, and two outlaws stood in the shade of a scrawny elm tree waiting for the reprieve of a storm bruising the horizon. Vasilija leaned against the tree trunk, desert dust coating her stetson, freckling the bridge of her nose. Her glacial eyes were fixed on the jagged edges of the distant mountains where the storm brewed. Prolly ten minutes out. Enough time to rest.

"It's whiskey in my hip flask. Nothin' fruity."

She unhooked the flask, took one swig, and offered it to Tarhos. Beside her, Meerschaum munched on dying grass, his ears twitching at hovering flies.

A swipe of her tongue across her lips, Vasilija continued, "If you're tryin' to head to town before that storm hits, I reckon we got another eight minutes to kill."
