Mastery Journal Finale: Another Chapter Closes And Another One Begins
Personal Development & Leadership
This course was one of a kind. It thought me so much about myself and what I needed to work on. Reading the 48 Laws Of Power by Robert Greene was one of my favorite readings. Some laws that I read I noticed that I was practicing it, so now my awareness of harnessing the laws to work for me enhanced my thought process to a whole new level. Becoming very comfortable with who you are and the will to change. Perspectives change all the time. It was very important for me personally to know and realize what I knew about myself and how I can be a better me to help someone else become a better “them”.
Executive Leadership
This was another favorite course of mine. Read a book by John C. Maxwell called Developing The Leader Within You. Another great book on leadership and development on your character. In this class I research top leaders such as Steve Jobs, Lucian Grainge , and a few others to see their methods and why in their chosen fields were they considered leaders. On top of that I took a course on developing executive presence on and off the work field which proved to be very substantial for me. Lots of strategies were taught and have been implemented in my new plans and ways on how I conduct business.
Project & Team Management
What a great month. I absolutely learned a lot from my Professor Nicholas Carver and my peers. This class like my previous classes taught me a lot about myself, but more in depth. To another level. I took a “DISC” test that measured my Dominance , Influence, Steadiness, and Compliance . My results were as followed :
Dominance 42%
Influence 39%
Steadiness 14%
Compliance 5%
It was funny seeing the results because I always felt that I had a high Dominance trait as well as the Influence trait since they both pretty much coincide with each other. The lesson from this class are indeed timeless. The character case studies were great tools because it showed me that I may also be a case study and my actions will be looked upon. I will be able to take what I learned and experienced for both professional and personal needs. I will take these lessons and apply it to my business endeavors with in the music and tech industries.
There are many more things I learned such as discovering “EQ” which stands for Emotional Intelligence. Which is considered more important than “IQ”. Emotional Intelligence introduces self awareness and promotes self regulation. Emotional Intelligence means the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions . There are four branches under this subject which are Perceiving Emotions, Reasoning with Emotions, Understanding Emotions , and Managing Emotions. Understanding your emotions will give you the ability to understand other people’s emotions which in the end only make things a lot more better. During this class we were able to conduct our own policies that promoted self arbitration. Everything had to be done without getting higher management involved.
So to bring everything out in the fore front everything you learn from this class you can apply it to both aspects of your life both personally and professionally. Learning about Team and Project Management is a very beneficial.
Business Storytelling & Brand Development Mastery Blog Post
This has been a great month. As I reflect on the my original post in my Mastery Class I felt that I have reached my objectives. The objectives I places upon myself was to one research articles referencing successful companies, which more than one assignment required us too. Research Marketing companies whose expertise are in brand development and business story telling. Read upon business development books, these were provide among other resources by the professor. Another objective was to review Business Storytelling with C.C. Chapman course on Lynda.com. All of these objectives were accomplished.
I really enjoyed this course a lot. I learned the science of creating a brand which I honestly had very little knowledge about compared to what I have learned this past month. The new skills acquired were learning how to implement brand development strategies and using story telling principles to strengthen a business. This class also allowed us to use what we are learning to apply it to our own brands we are developing which I am very ecstatic about. Also reading on the 22 Laws Immutable Laws Of Branding by Al Ries and Laura Ries was very informative. It is the blueprint or some may say the bible of branding.
The way I will continue to use what I learned from this course in my personal and professional life is that I will take these teachings and apply it to my new business startup Tunez Nation. I will use this to grow my brand as well as use it to grow other brands I am associated with. Also I will personally use it on myself in developing my own personal brand where I can properly display myself to others in the hopes of landing new business clients and strategic partnerships. This class has been a very essential tool for me this month and I am very glad this is part of the curriculum.
Mastery Journal Post: Entertainment Finance
This has been a great month. I have learned so much from David Wolfe and I deeply appreciate it. Learning how to do different and the reasons why we were doing it was amazing to me. The reason is because I have heard a lot of these financial terms but I had not one clue what they were talking about. Now I fully understand the definitions , financial literacy came with a little ease for me. This class really put everything in perspective. It teaches you also about your financial future and the very importance of it. I personally have been fixing my credit and learning from this class I received even more tips that I can always use. You need to have a good background especially if you are trying to set up a business any time soon. Financial literacy and understanding is very, very, important when dealing with investors. You have to learn to stand on your two feet and deal with the heat in the kitchen that is presented to . I appreciate this class very much and I am glad this class was offered. I am sure just like me, many were very happy that now they have a huge understanding in the financial world. I have definitely accomplish my goal for this month that I set out for. The main goals were to one expand my knowledge in personal finance as well as to understand the financial structure in the “Entertainment World” as I stated in one of my assignments outlining my plan for this class. I personally believe this class should be two months long at least because I am pretty sure there are more fundamental lessons we can learn from and apply it to our own needs in our everyday lives. A thought to remember.
Mastery Journal: Negotiating & Deal Making
This class has been a very informative class as the rest of the classes have been. I have learned a quite amount on the art of negotiation and deal making. In this class I felt I have accomplished my original goal for this class which was to understand negotiation as a whole. Through this class content I was able to research different methods of negotiations from either stand point. There were certain terms that was newly taught to me such as “Objective Criteria” and “Separating the People from the Problem” to name a few. There was a lot of reading in this class that at some points were challenging not because of the material but because of the course load on top of videos you had to review. I for one thought I had a pretty good grasp on the time management skills but in reality with an internship , three jobs, plus school work I learned I had to be even more consistent on my time management skills. This class push my time management skills to a whole new level which I appreciated because in more ways than one it helped with my internship as well.
The way I can apply everything I learned to both my personal and professional life is by personally if I have any issues such as car troubles, looking for deals on new equipment, car purchases, property purchases, etc. Things of that nature you can negotiate pricing. A lot of people are unaware of that feat. You don’t have to purchase a car for the price that is listed, you can negotiated with the dealer. Even at shopping stores where you can negotiate on merchandise. Professionally the way I would apply these teachings is by using the tactics when I’m negotiating deals for my business to garner investors or even negotiating salaries. These class is what I needed to complete my conquest in obtaining mastery in the entertainment business field.
Mastery Journal: Product & Artist Management
This month has been very eye opening experience for me. Reason being because I manage a few artists as well have secured an internship with DEF JAM RECORDINGS as their Marketing Intern. As I learned different techniques and styles of management I was able to connect them with my everyday hands on job experience with Def Jam. I felt I met my original objective being in this course. As mentioned before learning different strategies and tactics when dealing with Artists and Product, whether tangible or not. The way this course will help me both professionally and personally is because this is something I do on an everyday basis. So while I am practicing these techniques I can apply everything I am learning on a real time basis. This will help me with managing the artists that I currently have on my roster. While I broaden my horizons on that end of the management spectrum. I can also apply it on the other half of the spectrum that being a product. My product which is a software and service base. The new music streaming service I hope to bring to light in the near future. I learned from this course how to seek out my target market and how to connect with them on a higher level. All which is important whether it is a product or artist. The only difference of the two is with an artists you are dealing with an actual human being but same rules still apply none the less. I am grateful for taking this class and now feel my Mastery in the Entertainment business is growing at even more of a fast rate, which is incredible to me because I am watching a lot unfold in front of my eyes. Product and Artist management has been a great class to be in.
MASTERY JOURNAL: ADVANCED ENTERTAINMENT LAW
This month was a very informative month as all of the other courses that I have taken. It was great learning about contracts and intellectual property , even though I may have had previous knowledge on this subject; I loved how we dug deeper in the subjects. The most exciting part of the assignments was examining case studies that applied specifically to your business which I felt was very important. The reason this is important to know is because you can strategize on how to not be in the same predicament as previous companies. This course met exactly my expectations in me wanting to expand my knowledge on entertainment law, which I was also able to apply to new intellectual property cases that are currently in the works.
The way I see myself using this course both personally and professionally is that I feel both ready and equip with the new found knowledge I possess. Personally knowing this will help me out just in general when reviewing what is going on in the industry. For me personally business and personal are all together in one package for me. So days I may not be working I am still looking into what is going on in the industry as it is my job to stay up to date. Professionally they way this course will help me is by making sure my business and every step I make is legally sound. I should not have to worry about anything to gravely because of the knowledge I learned and possess. Once again this was a great month and great course. I feel every person involved in any level of the entertainment industry should take a course of this stature. It will benefit not only the person but the industry as a whole which is very important.
Mastery Journal: Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution
This course has been truly informative. I love this subject and this course. My original goal that I stated was to one find key leaders contact information in the divisions of publishing and distribution , take the Lynda.com course on digital publishing , and last but not least research companies behind publishing and distribution as stated in my previous post on my outlook and expectations in this course. I personally felt that I have learned a lot in this course and has opened my eyes to other opportunities that I kind of turned my head too, but now its that pounding question of “why do that ?”. The course professor Kim Craft was very inspirational just by her background and her enthusiasm in our work. That right there is motivating as I hope to build more of a relationship with Kim Craft and continue learning beyond this course. The way my goals were met were simple. I did the work and did outside research to better understand this topic. The one of the most important topic hands down in the entertainment industry as a whole as there are many current situations that is causing this massive shift.
In this course I learned about the distribution and publishing of music , film and tv, video games, and books. Learned how to properly pitch and speak to executives and overall how to approach them. I learn a lot about self publishing which was amazing because I actively self publish and distribute music, so it was very relatable to me and the fact on learning about book publishing because I am in the process of writing a book that if done correctly can be a big movie. The way I will apply what I learned both professionally and personally is simple, I am already doing it. I will polish and tune my skills in this area and make more effective decisions as I self publish and distribute my content and content of others.
MASTERY JOURNAL: DIGITAL MARKETING
My original goal for this course of Digital Marketing was to learn “the different channels that can be used and show how one can be effective in the digital world which we are currently in.”(Kinglyte.tumblr.com, 2015). With in this process the strategies I came up with and tactics were of the obvious which were to study methods of Digital Marketing,. On top of that I’ve mention to research and study the top leaders in Digital Marketing as well as to take an online tutorial through Lynda.com on “Online Marketing Fundamentals”.
The first half of this course I actually learned finally what exactly a “KPI” was and how to properly use it. I also learned about how to use Google Analytics in depth and actually was able to apply what I learned with the professional blog we have been working on throughout the course degree program. The way what I have learned so far in the first half of this class that I will use personally and professionally is by using the same tactics that I am learning right now to personally apply it to my blog to build awareness on who I am as an individual. If not on the blog I will do it on my personal website. The method of this is called SEO, which I definitely will be using to get my business out world wide. SEO is all about optimizing your search engine key words so that you are able to appear on top of the search engine lists.
Digital Marketing is one of the classes I have been looking forward to because I want to make sure I am covering everything correctly when releasing my products and services . This quote “A common trait among successful people is that they have friends who expect them to move on up.” –Seth Godin may seem random at first but it is not. The reason being is because I use to think digital marketing relied upon you telling a friend and they tell a friend and that was it. I had experience in releasing a product and trying to use this method and it was horrible, I felt I seen who really supported me and who didn’t. I use to question my product and service, as I read Seth’s blog I came to realize its who you keep around , so I am applying that also digitally in the sense of “who I market too”.
Mastery Journal: Business Plan Development
This month in the Business Plan Development course we put together the pieces to our specific business plan while fine tuning it. The goal for this course was very simple, it was to effectively put together a tight business plan and to be able to execute it. The way my insight have changed was by allowing me to actually put together my plan and see it come to life. I must say when I was plugging in the financial numbers, it came to me a slight reality that one day I will be reaching out to investors about my business idea. I honestly can not wait to experience that part of the process searching for investors and convincing them why my idea needs to come to life and the effects it will bring to my specific industry.
In this course I learned more about myself being patient, and the art of being prepared. Now this isn’t the first time I have learned this lesson. I feel it was more of moving on to the next level. It is a different type of discipline that is needed. You have to know that you will revisit your business plan more than ten times and probably make multiple changes. The way I plan to use what I learned both personally and professionally is by continuing building more business plans for all of my ideas and help others as well. Practice makes perfect in my belief. Also certain skills like being organize, and researching skills will be enhanced. I appreciate this course and enjoyed the lessons that were taught and the guidance that was provided. Classes like this one really gives hands on experience that is much needed. Now an individual like myself will be properly equipped and prepared to join the business arena. Thank You Steve.
Final Project: Business Plan
This class incorporated everything I learned into one project that had a few different parts. I am very happy to make it this far because words can not express my feelings in such a surreal moment as I am currently typing this. I have polished my plan and continue under the guidance of William Thompson learn from his experience on the business world of yesterday and today. Masters Of Science in Entertainment Business have been completed. Prepared I am to the fullest and I am looking forward to the successful path I am building for myself and others. Thank You Full Sail University and my supporters.
