Though the objects may seem like stationary and silent, upon closer inspection we can see the memory of countless past events. Not only historical buildings are depicted, which are well versed in the actualities of old times, but their modern pairs are also showcased. These forms are developed by building on their predecessors, respecting or even breaking traditions, which means they cannot be separated from each other. So the pieces of my series are all related and show a process arching over many eras.

While the Japanese architect may not have been the obvious choice to work with a historic Italian building, Ando’s solution combined a total respect for the existing building with the sharp minimalism for which he is known. Stripping back centuries of additions, the building was largely restored to its original structure. At the heart of the building’s deep plan, a pure concrete volume hints at the architect of the restoration, serving to organize the spaces around it. In 2013, the building was photographed by Luca Girardini on the occasion of the exhibition “Elogio del dubbio.”

Maximizing ventilation throughout this traditional family home in Vietnam was a priority for the local architecture practice. Perforated brick walls and a divided roof were used to allow light and air into the building. Porous walls mean that a light breeze flows through the house, providing occupants with some respite from intense weather conditions. Specializing in sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions for Vietnamese homeowners, Tropical Space used hollow clay bricks that can absorb rain and reduce heat.
