spencer smiled, sadly, “it’s psychology. some people are wired differently. it’s awful, but –” spencer shrugged, “’monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. they live inside us, and sometimes, they win’ – it’s a quote by an author, stephen king.” he shook his head, “sometimes there isn’t a clear reason – but, the hardest part is empathy. i chase guys like him–” he gestures to the map, “–for my job, and sometimes, at the end of the day, you have to empathize with them – they’re monsters, they’re terrible, but they still are humans. and even the worst built houses were built by someone, and every nail that built them has a story, had a part in making them.”
he paused, swallowing, “i have seen far worse monsters, though – doing the job i have for as long as i have.”
“we don’t have that where i’m from. people are either villains or heroes. villains go to the isle of the lost, everyone else lives in auradon.” ben was about to say that the quote made no sense to him. everyone in auradon was fundamentally good. even someone like chad-- selfish, self-centered-- had goodness at his core. but he had seen the struggle in mal, the fight between who she was raised to be and who she wanted to be. just because she and the other VKs had overcome the evil inside them, that didn’t mean everyone could. though ben still believed everyone deserved a chance to try. “i think know what you mean. about empathy. even the worst villains deserve a chance.”
