Im internally beefing with a local artist/vendor that I actually adore, but they're selling plushies for crazy high prices and I want to support local art but it just makes no fucking sense to me. So for starters it's not technically an original design. It's based off of a product from an existing brand that no longer produces the product, but they are still widely available secondhand. There is a high demand for the originals currently which go for in the realm of $100 on eBay currently. This creator is charging $120 for theirs. Their product is much smaller than the plush version of the original product and does not have the same operational abilities. It's like basically the beany baby version of an animatronic character. I personally also find the bodily proportions of the recreation odd. I also as a rule typically will not buy any more plushies that are not big enough to cuddle. The last time I spent that much on a plush was the 30th anniversary jumbo Pikachu. Heck, I don't even think my jumbo build a bear plush cost me $120. I know that artists need to value their time, and they also probably have a market that is willing to pay that much considering that I've seen them post setting up at furry conventions, and respect to them for making that money, but I can't help but feel alienated as a regular guy that gets paid by the hour like most people that would be interested in this stuff locally tend to be. It's just frustrating. I feel like it would be hard to try to say anything without coming off as rude. If it was really well made the most I could see myself paying for a beanie baby size plush is like $60 and that would be after much debate and internal bargaining, deciding if it's really worth it or if there are other things I might want more that I should save that money for. I feel like in a convention you want to have a price range that someone would just impulse purchase and not even really think about. For me I would put a plush like that at $15-40 in that case. Truly even if they're paying crazy high prices for the fabric and hand sewing/embroidering each one there's no way it costs them in both money and time nearly as much as they're selling it for. It's not even their own character for crying out loud. Not to be that guy but I'm sure I could make something similar myself for a lot cheaper. And then what if I really enjoy making it and decide to sell my own version?? Would I be making an enemy of a store that I really admire by doing that? They also sell smaller things for actually reasonable prices like stickers and keychains so I can still support them that way, but it just really irks me when something is priced out in a way that alienates a large part of the fanbase. Another thing too is that I follow a lot of plush makers and there are way more skilled and seasoned makers that can be commissioned for something much larger and better quality for the same price point. It just feels like if I had $120 to spend there's no way I could justify buying from these guys. There's just so apparently so many better places to put that money. Idk maybe one day I'll be brave and ask them if they would ever sell a B-grade plush for a discounted price or something. Even so Idk how far they would be able to come down if their starting point is $120. It's just bonkers to me.
I think people who use the term "poser" suck
Or anyone who would try to alienate someone from a community or identity based on like idk how good they are at it or how knowledgeable they are or something?
Idk I feel like these are the kind of people who want to attach like social politics onto everything for no reason. Neurotypical behavior maybe?
I was kinda a scene kid in middle school (my most prominent trait was weeb, but the scene was definitely in there) but like I'm talking age range 12-16 give or take. I didn't have a fucking job. I wasn't on social media for the majority of that time. I completely missed the window for Myspace. My scene style was limited to what I saw my friends wearing compounded by what my mom was willing to purchase for me with her own money and let me run around wearing. And she did not like that I was not a normie child. I had a couple of neon tutus, basically any random/silly or anime graphic T-shirt I could get my hands on and a lot of knee high socks to mix and match, but that's about it. And I didn't know how to do fuck all with my hair outside of dying it with splat and cutting my bangs to cover one eye. Am I a big faker bc I was a literal child and not aware I could use the Internet for things other than games and watching the same 5 YouTube videos over and over? Bc I didn't know about big poofy hair or how to make kandi or more than 2 songs by botdf? I've seen mixed opinions on if scene music is even really a thing much less a requirement to brand yourself as scene.
Idk maybe it's my tism but I dress how I dress bc it makes me happy and I like how it looks, not to impress any certain group of people or imply that I have knowledge about any certain thing.
Lately I'm into cybercore stuff and I would say I'm probably less computer/tech literate than most of my peers. I grew up with it and know how to use it enough to get by, but I wouldn't say that my usage is very clever. Im bad at finding things and teaching myself things. My attention span is not great so if I'm looking into something just for the sake of wanting to know more, I can easily become discouraged and give up unless it is accessible and engaging. I do listen to beepboop computer music tho lol.
Is every woman a poser every time she puts on a pair of pants if she doesn't know the full and exact history of how women became socially acceptable to wear pants?
I don't understand where we draw the line on this stuff if we're going to be drawing lines.
Theres been a lot of times at anime conventions that I decided not to buy a plushy even tho I thought it was super cute bc I didn't know what character it was or if it was even a specific character or not and y'know what I shoulda just bought those fuckers. Who cares if I don't know what it is? it's cute and its mine now fuck everyone.
If you gatekeep ur shit bc u have to feel superior ur gonna make other ppl gatekeep themselves from finding new things to love and maybe eventually actually learn about. The truest form of self expression is finding out what things u like without the opinions of people around u hanging over u.
Y'know what one of the best examples of this shit is.. old ladies who have an insane collection of something. Like a kitchen filled entirely with only cow trinkets. Like do you look at her and think "ok time to quiz her about cow facts" or "I bet she's never even owned a real cow" like no you leave her alone. Cows make her happy. Let her fill her kitchen with them. You don't need to know anything else about it.
Also like fashion esp evolves so like if someone who sucks is jacking your style that's just gonna happen sometimes idk what to tell you. The Karen's stole that hairstyle that's spikey in the back from the alt kids technically, but also nothing is stopping you from still getting that hairstyle and wearing it with the style it was originally intended for.
Y'all are like the kids in school who would lose their shit if someone tried to do the same thing as you. Like your playing mermaids and you want to be a blue mermaid and then the kid you don't like that your parents make you play with says she wants to be blue too and you freak out and throw a tantrum bc you wanted to be blue first and no one else can be blue in your fucked up little kid brain for some reason.
Tldr: let ppl have things. If someone is not up to your personal intellectual standards stop blaming it on their outfit, you do not have to be friends or engage with anyone you don't want to so maybe just go to therapy about it or something instead of being mean and snooty online.
