Kim and Jimmy’s scene at the end of the ep made me melt along with everyone else. She’s the only person who has ever stood by him when things got hard. No one has ever loved him this way. He can barely understand it.

But at the same time… when he asks her why she chooses “this guy”… she says to consider it a sunk cost. She says it playfully, but really… it tells us several things. She’s aware of his flaws. She doesn’t deny them. She doesn’t say he’s a great guy with no faults. She doesn’t lie to him.

But… to be told someone stands by you because they’ve invested too much to back out… that’s not really the best thing. I know she’s trying to make light and I am not criticizing her… but it tinges this moment with a subtle discomfort. There’s a reason the sunk cost fallacy is… a fallacy. The show always gives us this unsettled feeling, with these two. The beauty of this moment is tinged with sadness, because we can see the fault lines that’ll eventually crack and shatter.

It’s bittersweet seeing Jimmy and Kim caring so deeply for each other because obviously, Kim isn’t in Jimmy’s future.
