āIch kann Dir und niemandem begreiflich machen, wie es in mir ist. Wie kƶnnte ich begreiflich machen, warum es so ist; das kann ich nicht einmal mir selbst begreiflich machen."Ā
āi canāt make you or anyone understand how it is inside of me. How could i explain why it is that way; i canāt even explain that to myselfāĀ
-Letters to Milena, Franz Kafka, written between 1920-1923(?) during his stay at an Italian sanitarium
(Pardon the German, I have no idea if thatās the actual quote, google translate is a pain.)
Ughhhhhhhhh I love my bug son. My little mantis. My little parasitic wasp. My little freak who just wants love.
Anyways, meet Laurence Whitby! My Magnus Archives OC! He is the head of the preservation unit in the Magnus Institute, and originally he just started out as an assistant trying to help get funding for college. But that was long ago, near the end of Gertrudeās era (what am I talking about??? I havenāt even finished s1⦠Iāve just read too many spoilersā¦). Nowadays, he tends to stick to either his apartment or the preservation office down the hall.
He has a complicated relationship with a lot of things. Jon and Martin, religion, music boxes, Jane⦠with our Worm Queen herself, Laurence tends to view her as both a malicious figure, and oddly enough⦠the mother that abandoned him. Back when Laurence was a child, his mother couldnāt handle him. So, she sent him off to his grandfatherās home, and he instilled a lot of his religious beliefs into Laurence starting when Laurence was eight years old. And while he doesnāt follow those beliefs as an adult, what does follow him is the odd comfort that music boxes bring him. His grandfather listened to these tunes frequently, and over time, he grew to find the music boxes help him relax, or clear his mind (such as Brahamsā āwaltz in A-flat major, op. 39, no. 15ā, āmy grandfatherās clockā, and āSerenadeā by Schubert.)
To Jane, laurence is a misbehaving child who is refusing to ācome homeā, in her words. All she wants is for Laurence to stop fighting the corruption, and to let it consume him so that he may fully join the hive, and become a proper avatar for the crawling rot. To Laurence, Jane is a sickening voice in his head, promising that the corruption will bring warmth, that it will comfort unlike those around him. He has yet to fully believe these.
So unfortunately, because of how much he resists the corruption, he tends to get sick a lot. And heĀ loathesĀ this. After a while, he had to frequently stay home due to feverish symptoms, even throwing up a gross mixture of wasp pulp and normal, human bile. But Laurence cannot bring himself to properly take care of himself, so heās also frequently tried to attend work when he canāt even focus on things properly.
As for his relationship with Jon and Martin⦠itās complicated. Jonās eyes seeĀ too much, to the point where if Jon looks too closely, Laurenceās glasglow scars (the āmandible scarsā on his cheeks) will literally start toĀ itch,Ā as if mandibles are begging to be clawed out. But the corruption writhes with warmth when Jon stares, because while the corruption hates the scrutiny of the eye, it still adores the attention that being observed brings. This is why the Jon x Laurence side of things took longer to⦠develop, in a sense. Meanwhile, Laurence and Martin is a different story. With Laurence, martin tries to overlook the⦠oddness that Laurence carries with him. He brings him tea, reminds him to wear his glasses, and even sometimes will help turn on the music boxes for Laurence. Laurence isnāt used to beingĀ cared for, but again, the corruption loves attention as long as it doesnāt come with judgement. In a sense, the Corruption contrasts the Lonely in Martin. The lonely makes Martin feel invisible most days, meanwhile Laurenceās hyper focus (his āmantis stareā, if you will.) helps deter the Lonely, and makes Martin feelĀ seenĀ in an albeit, odd way.
Anyways. Thats it! Iām still trying to decide how a poly-ship would work between them, as in what the group dynamic would be. (So Jon x Laurence x Martin)
Yeah thatās all I could think of rn. Ask me anything about Laurence. Uhhhh fun facts!
-Laurence has HORRIBLE eyesight but refuses to get glasses
-heās supposed to be based on a praying mantis, and a parasitic wasp
-he hears wasp buzzing in his skull when overwhelmed.
-he has three praying mantises in his apartment! Theyāre basically his children. Thereās a Giant Asian Mantis, a European Mantis, and his most recent mantis, an Orchid Mantis (heās in his nymph stage currently), they are kept in separate enclosures for safety reasons. (I havenāt decided what he should name the mantises, any suggestions?)
Hereās my baby, Laurence. I canāt draw hands. Iām still trying to decide his color palette, I just know he has brown hair.
BONUS!!! JANE ART!!! AND MY OC, CORA!!!
